Actually, my grandparents had a farm in Missouri...we used to go there every summer...and they had an OUTHOUSE..ugh.

Actually, TX, the STL metro was spared any real damage. As far as I know, no one in this area lost power. Now those poor folks south of here had some real problems. Many homes were destroyed..

Shoes?!?! I've heard of them here in Denver but they are relatively unknown up in the mountains. Well, unless you're talking about something to keep the feet warm in winter....
We had an outhouse til I was about 3. Even after we got modern us kids used it so we didn't have to go in the house.
That was back in the "olden days" when kids actually played outside all day!
I remember those days....I would hit the front door at about 7:00 AM....and other than meals...not go in the house until after 9:00 PM...
BUT, we DID have to go in the house, we weren't lucky enough to have an outdoor bathroom....LOL

I DID walk to school in the snow, I'll have you know...but it wasn't 20 miles..and I had a pair of shoes...but no BOOTS!..my ankles were always frozen by the time I got there.
Well...just because you live in the ultra sophisticated burg of Denver...no need to slam the folks in Missouri...the state that RUSH got his start in, I do believe...

allowed to wear pants under our dresses but we had to take them off when we got to school.
I also have the cure for half the adhd too. We had a huge playground, much longer than a football feild and about 4 blocks wide. We got to school every day about half hour early and played. Had swings, slides, jungle gyms, teeter totters. Had baseball feild, football, jump rope. (real slides too!! -- not short little plastic things). By the time school started we "blew the stink off" as my mother used to say. Not much tardiness either.
When I was doing student teaching in college in 70's teachers decided they couldn't bother to do the playground duty. Kids weren't even allowed on the playground before school. About half hour after school started kids were bouncing off the walls --- they woke up!! If schools would actually let them play before school they would use up all that energy.
No one even got killed on that nasty dangerous playground equipment, just a few scraped kneew and a couple broken arms.
I hadn't thought of it that way...but you are right.
We used to get to the school early..and play. Plus we had PE every year up through 12th grade. I don't think they do anymore.
And, we used to play DODGE BALL!!! Yes, we did...and NO ONE ever got hurt enough to even stop playing!!! No one ever go their feelings hurt either.
We kept SCORE when playing softball and baseball, too!!
And, we didn't have social promotion...we actually had to sweat whether we were going to get promoted every year.
It may upset some in Denver but this is not what many people consider "sophisticated." In many ways Denver remains a cow town.... and proud of it.
