Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys Are Favorite Teams Among U.S. Adults
Harris Poll ^ | September 26, 2006

Posted on 09/27/2006 7:56:05 PM PDT by ConservativeStatement

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2006 Super Bowl Champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers, are ranked as the No. 1 favorite National Football League (NFL) team among U.S. adults who follow pro football. Though the Steelers were in the top five last year, this is their first time at the top of this list since tracking began on this topic in 1998. The Dallas Cowboys remain at No. 2, a position they have held since 2004. Rounding out the top five are the Indianapolis Colts (No. 3, moving up five percentage points from last year's ranking), the Green Bay Packers (No. 4, dropping from No. 1 in 2005) and the New England Patriots (No. 5). These are the results of a nationwide survey conducted online by Harris Interactive(R) between September 7 and 13, 2006 among 2,747 U.S. adults, of whom 1,306 follow professional football.

Although I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan, I always liked the Oilers, particularly during the Snake/Campbell/Renfro years.

Look out football, here we come,
Houston Oilers, number one.
Houston has the Oilers, the greatest football team.
We take the ball from goal to goal like no one's ever seen.
We're in the air, we're on the ground ... always in control
And when you say the Oilers, you're talking Super Bowl.
'Cause we're the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
Yes, we're the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Number One.
We've got the offense.
We've got the defense.
We give the other team no hope. 'Cause we're the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers,
You know we're gonna hold the rope.

You kinda had to be in the Astrodome with all those "Love Ya Blue" signs and that song rolling over the intercom. Terry Bradshaw said he hated going to the Astrodome worse than any other stadium because of the frenzy of the Oiler fans and that fight song.

Of course, I'll never forget the 1992 game where the Oilers were leading the Bills 35-3 at half time and managed to blow it; losing 41-38 in OT.

No kidding. The Cardinals really hate the Cowboys because the only games they ever sold out were Cowboys games, and there were more Cowboys fans in Arizona than Cardinals fans. Dallas also is the most popular team in Mexico. Tex Schramm was the first NFL manager to do spanish language broadcasts, and the Cowboys almost always had hispanic kickers.

Just a side note, I think one of the big reasons the Cowboys and Steelers have a huge fan base, aside from their success on the football field over a considerable time, is because they have the coolest uniforms in the NFL.

A little NFL uniform trivia: The Steelers only have a logo on one side of their helmet because US Steel, which gave them the helmet stickers, didn't originally give them enough to put one on each side. The team decided to put them on one side until another shipment of stickers came in. When the stickers came in, they decided they liked having the logo on one side and left it that way.

Tex Schramm designed the current Cowboys home uniforms, with the white jerseys, silver pants, helmets and dark blue star with an outline on it. He decided on the uniform after viewing the different uniforms on a television monitor. He chose the uniform because it looked best on television. It was also designed to look good on black and white TV, which was in most US households at the time.

Call it a jinx or whatever, but the Cowboys never seem to play as well in any uniform besides their white jerseys. At the time Schramm selected the Cowboys to wear white, the Cowboys were the only team in the NFL to have white jerseys as home jerseys, and they once went nearly two years without wearing their travelling jerseys. Schramm said he made the decision so the Dallas fans could see the Bears, Packers, etc., in their trademark home jerseys instead of their traveling jerseys. The Saint Louis Cardinals and Washington Redskins were the first teams to wear their traveling jerseys at home to make the Cowboys wear their dark jerseys during a game.

Man, that was wicked. I was really hoping to see an all-Texas Super Bowl that year.

How does a Raider fan teach his child to count...

2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace.

I couldn't vote the way they ask the question: "What are your two favorite National Football League teams?"

My two favorite are the Bears and whoever is playing Green Bay. :)

Too bad their coach can't stop slobbering and spitting.....

And their "D" likes to go for QBs knees.

Yep, but I'd also add any team that is sacking/intercepting Brett Favre's selfish, old, washed-upped, over-rated ass. Da Bears rule the NFC.

That was a good old fashioned divisional defensive game Sunday. My heart stopped several times.
