WASHINGTON - Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional official.

Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e-mails surfaced in recent days.

Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.

Foley's election opponent, Democrat Tim Mahoney, has called for an investigation.

"I knew this guy was going to eventually get the GOP in trouble."

How did you know? What did you know?

So e-mailing a kid is fodder for resignation but getting b.j.'s from an intern not much older, that makes that president who is painted as a victim of mean Republicans who dared suggest he be removed from office, a hero who leaves office with a 65% approval rating. The e-mails may have been a little weird, but they weren't to the level of what Bubba did. We live in a topsy turvey, Alice in Wonderland nation right now.

wouldn't Jeb have to live in the Congressional District to run there ... not that I think he'd do it. It's not going to be good for ANY Republican in that district now, including the Gubernatorial and Senatorial candidates.

Does this mean the Jeb can appoint a new member prior to the election?

Governors can only appoint replacements to the Senate. Special elections are held to replace Congressmen.

This is how far down the rat has sunk. He is coming to understand that he will lose again and has lashed out at a gay Republican that they did get some votes out of. Foley was outed years ago by a DC queer's website. They have had this card up their sleeve for at least two years. He won with 68%, the district is most likely safe. They will gain nothing but the "joy" of having destroyed a man. Maybe gay rank and file Dems will realize it is ALWAYS the rat that outs people. But probably not.

Based on his actions, looks like he disgraced himself and a list of others.

Unlike the sorry DEMS, I won't support wrong doing because he's on my side (was).

Then the Rats will turn right around and criticize the GOP for not supporting Foley because they are so intolerant.

Governors can only appoint senate vacancies. The Republicans will just replace Foley on the ballot. And this is a fairly safe Republican district so despite those ringing their hands on this thread it will likely remain GOP.

He should of been a Liberal congressman from Cape Cod, Mass who had sex with a male page. Not only would he have gotten re elected, but he would retire with a full pension, too.

No doubt they'll let the Republicans handpick a replacement for him on the ballot. Anything less would be a "hypertechnical reliance" on the rules.

I don't know what the reality is but I've seen Foley on TV and he has been a staunch Bush supporter. Once this kind of charge is made, it may be too tough to beat, regardless of the truth. He did however, seem to fold his tent rather quickly.

Or as we used to say in the Boston State House, "Don't get caught with a dead nun or a love priest."

Once upon a time I used to laugh at that line. Not any more.

Rumor has it Foley will be moving to Massachusetts. Foley would have a pretty good chance up here, he can say Gerry Studds was his mentor. These libs up here love the fruity crowd.
