Gym Attire Seen As Latest Attempt to Force Shari'a in US
CNSNews ^ | October 02, 2006 | Monisha Bansal

A Muslim advocacy group's successful argument that a 9th grade student from a Virginia public high school did not have to wear regulation gym attire because of her Muslim religion, has fired up a critic of Islamic radicalism.

The 9th grader at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Va., was "threatened with failing the class if she did not wear shorts," according to a statement released by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

"The student's family contacted CAIR (of Maryland and Virginia) for assistance in resolving the issue. Following discussions with school officials, the student was moved to a different gym class and will be allowed to dress in attire that meets her religious needs," stated CAIR.

The group stated that initially, the girl's teacher told her "the law required that the student wear the shorts."

In light of the dispute over the gym class attire, CAIR also noted that it would conduct diversity training for Lake Braddock's newer staff, as well as "visit local middle and high schools to review their policies for accommodating the religious needs of Muslim students during Ramadan, Eid and throughout the school year."

But Daniel Pipes, a frequent critic of CAIR and the director of the Middle East Forum, told Cybercast News Service that the gym shorts are part of a "campaign" by CAIR to replace rules in the U.S.

It is a campaign "to adapt public schools in the United States to Islamic norms," Pipes said, and "is an integral part of its effort to adapt the country to the Shari'a, or Islamic law."

"Its success in getting the gym rules changed at Lake Braddock [Secondary] School, plus its success in providing 'diversity training' for school staff, have inspired it to become more bold and to 'review the policies' in other middle and high schools in an attempt to bend them too to the Shari'a," Pipes added.

Back in my Central America days I saw lots of Leftist Mennonites supporting the Sandinistas and the FMLN of El Salvador. Once I challenged a Mennonite couple about it who were wearing traditional clothing and they objected to the trendy Leftists. So just like Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, et al, it was a divided sect.

Still I don't think exceptions should be made in public schools for uniforms for Mennonites or mohammadans. Don't attend the school if you don't like the rules. Most public schools are unable to rise to the level of the cult of mediocrity anyway.

Don't forget pool tables, pin ball machines, and cigarette machines.

Yes, you may be right, or maybe they just want their daughter to dress more modest then being required. Personally I can understand a father not wanting his daughter to wear shorts around a bunch of young boys.

There is absolutely nothing in Sharia Law that requires the wearing of "modest" clothing or full skin coverage in an all girl environment. This is just another attempt to make others accommodate a Muslim demand.

But there is a tipping point, ...

It should've been reached long before now. I therefore conclude it ain't happening.

The article did not mention what the girl should wear as a substitute, and everyone thinks it is a burkha. Does anyone know the actual facts? Does the girl wear a burkha to school, or regular clothes?

A football is really made of cow hide. But that won't make any difference to the moozies. They are ignorant, 7th century holdovers that needs seventeen cuturies of catching up to do.

There, that's better.

When women have no control over their reproductive system you can expect them to appreciate the strong hand a muslim man offers. In order to defeat the muslim man, you have to empower his woman. Air drop birth control dials into the badlands and wait a while.

Turn the place into an estrogen and progesterone parking lot.

As I remember, it was Sarah who made the request and not her parents. Because of values instilled by her family, she was concerned about her modesty. I knew her family very well and they were definitely not Sandinista. Her father served in WWII as a conscientious objector and was a convoy driver in Italy.

How could the tipping point have been reached? Despite a few examples...it's not pervasive enough,

I therefore "conclude", with observational facts, that the tipping point has not been reached.

"I guess they would rather the girl go to gym in a burkha, trip over the thing while doing jumping jacks--then they could sue the school."

Well she's just a girl. Muslims following Sharia Law are not known for their progressive rights extended to women.

I thought public schools have local school boards and aren't run by the state or the fed.

Follow the money, my friend. And the NEA is EVERYWHERE.

Interesting. I love American Gigolo, City Hall and Mosquito Coast. The others... not too familiar with. Recognize Last Temptation of Christ, but did not see it; I thought it would be too disturbing.

Make her wear a burka and play basketball. I would pay money to watch that.

Seems to me I've seen nuns doing it, somewhere during my education years ago. Maybe they could wear long-johns to keep from exposing their legs? In high school, I wasn't too proud of my legs either :)

I've always approved of diversity training. My boys were taught to shoot a variety of different weapons in various calibers. I've always told them about the differences and why there is a need to adapt. We've even had to buy additional cabinets to accommodate them all.

I tried following the money once -- the folks at the bank got really upset. Kicked me out, in fact.
