3D foetal scans 'dangerously misleading'
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 10/3/06

Ultrasound images which show 12-week-old foetuses sucking their thumbs and walking in the womb are dangerously misleading, a group of scientists warned today.

The 3D images of unborn babies apparently behaving in a similar way to newborns raised questions over whether the upper limit for abortions should be reduced form 24 weeks.

However, a group of scientists has now warned the scans could be dangerously misleading as they do not reflect the true nature of an unborn baby's brain.

Dr Donald Peebles, a consultant in foetal medicine at University College London, said the temptation to associate foetal movements with adult movements was "incredibly dangerous" and said they contributed nothing to the debate over whether the legal time limit for abortion should be lowered.

Dr Huseyin Mehmet, a reader in developmental neurobiology at Imperial College London, said that a foetal brain at 23 and 24 weeks was "extremely immature" and described it as being like an orange that has been sliced in half.

But Julia Millington, of the Pro-Life Alliance, said it was irrelevant whether someone looking at the images fully understood the science behind it or not.

It's a person whether they want to admit it or not.

There's a word missing in the original. It should read, "a group of pro-abortion scientists warned today.

England is going to hell. It is a nice touch that they quoted a Muslim "doctor" comparing a human life to a fruit. I predict when Prince Charles becomes King he will convert to Islam. As much as I hate to say it, Britain is lost.

Maybe I'm just a dumb caveman, but could someone over there in that pro-abortion camp PLEASE tell me what is so "incredibly dangerous" or "dangerously misleading" about ultrasound images of an UNBORN BABY in the womb???

Nothing??? That's what I thought too. Just another case of irresponsible, inflammatory language being used to elucidate an extremist point of view I guess.

Well, considering they just referred to the foetuses as "unborn babies", they just rendered moot their own argument. Dems continue to amaze me...absolutely no logic in their thinking processes.

If we accept the premise that brain function determines whether a "fetus" is a "baby", could we not argue that the "fetal" brain does not start to act as a "baby" brain until several days after birth?

This is a disgusting article and I find the premise to be horrid.

What these scientists really wanted to say was: "Are you gong to believe me or your lying eyes?"

The bottom line is that these are human beings. Treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve.

I was pro-abortion before I became a father. Now, I think that it's the most selfish act that a woman could possibly perform. My opinion, I think, has been justified by what I've read about the latest abortion reforms - pro-abortionists are not talking about the health implications and such, instead they're talking about reforms making abortions "inconvenient".

Which, IMHO, they should be.

I predict Charles will never become king -- or if he does, he won't last very long.

Dangerous being a relative term when compared to what they want go on inflicting on these children ...

I guess the "it's just a clump of cells" argument is harder to sell when the woman is looking at the 3D face of her child sucking her thumb in utero.
