Pelosi Statement on Senator Frist’s Comments on the Taliban in Afghanistan
House Democratic Leader ^

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 03, 2006

CONTACT: Brendan Daly/Jennifer Crider 202-226-7616 Pelosi Statement on Senator Frist’s Comments on the Taliban in Afghanistan

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Senate Majority Leader Bill First’s comments that the Taliban should be included in the government in Afghanistan:

“We went to war in Afghanistan five years ago to crush the Taliban for the role it played in the 9/11 attacks. Senator Frist now suggests that the best way forward in Afghanistan is to coddle the Taliban by welcoming Taliban members into a coalition government, as if 9/11 had never happened.

“The Taliban remain a threat because, as Senator Frist has apparently just learned, President Bush did not finish the job against terrorism in Afghanistan before deciding to launch his ill-advised invasion of Iraq. The consequences of that decision, which the Republican Congressional leaders continue to ignore, are evident everywhere: in the abysmal security situation in Iraq; the unacceptable readiness conditions in our Army and Marine Corps; and the resurgent Taliban. It is long past time that the President refocuses our attention on the war on terror and finishes the job in Afghanistan.”

The Democrats are just mad at Frist for horning in on their territory. Coddling terrorists is the liberals' job.

Did Frist actually say that?

No, he did not.

His comments were mangled by an AP reporter into a 'comment' at odds with what he actually said. You can look up the actual comment - I think Instapundit has a link. I would post it myself, but didn't save the link, and would have to go looking.

Are these reporters ever going to be held accountable for printing their distorted, twisted stories? It's really out of control.

Here is what he said in response to the AP report:

I’m currently overseas visiting our troops in Afghanistan, but I wanted to take a moment to address an Associated Press story titled, “Frist: Taliban Should Be in Afghan Gov’t.” The story badly distorts my remarks and takes them out of context.

First of all, let me make something clear: The Taliban is a murderous band of terrorists who’ve oppressed the people of Afghanistan with their hateful ideology long enough. America’s overthrow of the Taliban and support for responsible, democratic governance in Afghanistan is a great accomplishment that should not and will not be reversed.

Having discussed the situation with commanders on the ground, I believe that we cannot stabilize Afghanistan purely through military means. Our counter-insurgency strategy must win hearts and minds and persuade moderate Islamists potentially sympathetic to the Taliban to accept the legitimacy of the Afghan national government and democratic political processes.

National reconciliation is a necessary and an urgent priority … but America will never negotiate with terrorists or support their entry into Afghanistan’s government."

Anyone see anything about letting the Taliban into the government of Afghanistan? I have not yet recovered the original quote that the reporter "Clintoned" for the press.

Thanks for posting the clarification of his remarks. As usual, Pelosi is down in the gutter.

Frist walked into that one.

After he gets his foot out of his mouth he should promise not to give Pelosi any more ammunication to shoot him with. Does Frist have a tin ear?

Ping. Miz Pelosi is playing Activist Harpy to the AP's Deliberate Distortion of Mr. Frist's Statements.

And I do mean deliberate. The ShriekMobile says:

“We went to war in Afghanistan five years ago to crush the Taliban for the role it played in the 9/11 attacks. Senator Frist now suggests that the best way forward in Afghanistan is to coddle the Taliban by welcoming Taliban members into a coalition government, as if 9/11 had never happened.

It is long past time that the President refocuses our attention on the war on terror and finishes the job in Afghanistan.”

LOL!!!

Just thought you'd wanna see the Second Act of this typical Democrat Play. Who do you think they'll put on for the 3rd act?
