Hooray For DDT's Life-Saving Comeback
Townhall ^ | 10-4-06 | John Stossel

Who says there's never any good news? After more than 30 years and tens of millions dead -- mostly children -- the World Health Organization (WHO) has ended its ban on DDT. DDT is the most effective anti-mosquito, anti-malaria pesticide known. But thanks to the worldwide environmental movement and politically correct bureaucrats in the United States and at the United Nations, the use of this benign chemical has been discouraged in Africa and elsewhere, permitting killer mosquitoes to spread death.

Where's the accountability on the left for the millions of lives lost due to flawed, feel good policies?

Where can I get some DDT? Our family has sort-of-kinda "adopted" a son and he has come down with his third case of malaria in 10 weeks.

Now it has been approved, when is it going to be used?

Well we know that won't happen. Personally, I'm pleased just to have even one member of the media recognize that the hyperbole of the left has resulted in millions of dead children. I'm forwarding this article to all the delusional eco-boobs I know just so that they know that I hold them accountable even if they refuse to admit their complicity.

Also, don't forget that when the left succeeded with their cut and run "solution" in Southeast Asia it did NOT stop the killing. In fact, around 3,000,000 people were murdered.

Also also, if we cut and run from Iraq a similar bloodbath will occur, IMHO.

Rush Limbaugh once said that Rachel Carson (author of Silent Spring) was responsible for more deaths than Hitler or Stalin.

Certainly there are different definitions of "responsibility" (or intent), but I know what he meant.

The sad thing is that at one point we had nearly wiped malaria off the earth.

"Silent Spring" is just like the "Communist Manifesto": a fanatasy of white western intelligentsia that led to the deaths of millions in the second and third worlds.

One can have Malarial relapses thru-out one's life even with-out new misquito bites....his recurrences should become less frequent with good nitrition, good health practises, and medicine.

Amazing. The left can not ony rewrite history, but is totally immune from the horrendous consequences of their failed policies. Why are we still allowing this?
Can anyone tell me of ONE policy generated from the left that has resulted in more good than harm???

Well, we are smog and polution free due to their environmental policies. There is no more poverty due to welfare. There is no more racism because of the civil rights laws. There is no more exploitation of the masses because of the labor unions. We all feel freer and less guilty because they have eliminated God from schools and government. They protected the caribou in ANWR. Gas is cheap and plentiful because of their energy policies. So is electricity. There is less crime and fewer deaths because of gun control.

And those are just a few of the good things they have done.

Beg to differ.
Regarding leftist policies:
Poverty - After $7 trillion dollars spent, poverty levels remain the same.
Racism: Current 'Black leaders' have arguably caused more racism through their affirmative action, victimhood jargon
Environment: Technology (generated by capitalism) has done more to clean the environment than the feel good policies of Liberals, which are responsible for millions of deaths (Silent Spring)
Caribou in Anwar: In Prudholme Bay, where they started drilling, the caribou herds actually increased due to the warmth provided by the pipes.
You should check your facts before you just assert something.

You are right about the relapses. That's why I am automatically denied the priviledge of giving blood. However, in this case, the DDT would go a long way to reducing the occurances of Denny's malaria. There are a lot of mosquitoes in his office. I think he's taking quinnine again and that can be debilitating, too. I plan on quizzing him about his iron count when I see him next. The parasites eat the red blood cells and so anemia often develops which makes you more susceptible.

Your suggestions are spot-on. Yet, since we live in a malaria area, I do believe the DDT could be a definite plus.

I'm new to Free republic. Tell me...was that post deliberately sarcastic? It sounds so much like what I encounter in conversations with liberals.

It's been known for years that DDT persists in colder climes but decays rapidly in the tropics. (DDT wasn't banned, just not used very much.) By being careful in applaction, one can get the mosquitos but spare the birds.
