The incident could have gotten incredibly ugly. The Secret Service detail might well have assumed (arguably, should have assumed) that this was an assassination attempt, and acted accordingly.

Agreed.

You can bet that there were all types of reviews and changes to SOP over that incident. I am proud of the President for coming to the aid of his agent...but there should have been some kind of a procedure in place that would have somehow kept him away from what was an incredibly dangerous situation.

Difficult since there were NO other agents with the President once the lead was blocked...which is exactly why they should have considered it a gravely dangerous situation to the President's life.

The President himself was then in the scuffle with no one watching his back. Again, I am proud that he would risk himself to protect and watch over those under him...I was appalled that he was put in that situation.

As I remember events that were reported - but quickly disappeared off the media radar - the set up was looking exactly like that - they tried to keep out ALL his body guards AND means of communication - they just don't know how to play Texas poker

Many felt sorry for President Clinton and most wondered why he tolerated it instead of just divorcing his "attack dog" wife.

It's kind of obvious why he wouldn't divorce her--his political viability--so I have to take this with some skepticism.

It's kind of obvious that if he'd tried, he'd have wound up like Vince Foster.

Happy to see this. I found it in my email this
morning, so it's getting around. Good thread.
