Saturday, 30 September 2006 By BosNewsLife News Center groups say. HANOI, VIETNAM (BosNewsLifVietnamese Christians risk often arrest for worshipping openly, rights e)-- An influential Vietnamese evangelical pastor and evangelist has been beheaded after he refused to halt his massive church services, his friends said Saturday, September 30.

In a letter to the US Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael W. Marine and obtained by BosNewsLife, fellow Christians said they are "extremely outraged," to report “an absolutely barbaric murder of Mennonite Evangelist Ashua in Dakto province, Vietnam on August 16” this year.

"Evangelist Ashua was cruelly beheaded by street gangsters after he had been ignoring the prohibition of the Vietnamese authorities to continue offering his religious services to thousands of his parishioners in Dakto province," wrote the International Movement for Democracy and Human Rights in Vietnam, a group comprised of Vietnamese activists in and outside the Communist-run nation.

"This atrocious murder to Evangelist Ashua, a well-respected Mennonite Church leader, was a tragic incident among thousands of recent governmental escalation of religious persecution against our Christian Ministers and their followers in recent years," the authors added.

"Last month, [Pastor] Nguyen Cong Chinh had been interrogated and beaten almost to death and serious injuries were inflicted on his body.” In the letter the group “strongly demand [an] extensive investigation in this brutal murder to bring the responsible mastermind people and the killers to justice."

HUMANITARIAN PROTECTION

They also urged "humanitarian protection for our desperate and helpless religious leaders” including well-known church leaders Nguyen Cong Chinh and Nguyen Hong Quang, and their followers, who the group claimed “have been under permanent brutal religious persecution."

There was no immediate reaction from US or Vietnamese officials. News of the latest reported case of persecution comes shortly before President George W. Bush is due to visit the region.

The Vietnamese government recently announced it would grant amnesty to hundreds of prisoners, including many dissidents and Christians, although doubts remain whether all of them will be released, BosNewsLife established. (With BosNewsLife research and reports from Vietnam).

Communism is just another form of Islam.

Really? They seem pretty different to me. Particularly since one is a political/financial philosphy (and atheistic at that) as opposed to Islam which has adherents who are highly theistic. Is this like saying Capitalism is just another form of Christianity? Or are you referring to the totalitarian state that results from those? If that's the case, that doesn't make Communism another form of Islam - just that it's another factor that could lead to a totalitarian government.

Your post is right on, but he (like myself) were trying to make a "funny".

At our church we had a guest speaker bemoaning that they don't know what has happened in Iraq to all of the the Christians that had been allowed to worship when Saddam was in power. (gag)

And this was after she had talked about her work as a "peace builder" during the Vietnam era. (gag gag)

Ashua is not a Vietnamese name. Though such "street gangsters" would also not dare so act outside of government approval (unless islamist, which seems unlikely there).

Yet however disappointing, may the struggle for the God of Life continue therein. And may He receive the soul of Ashua.
