Breaking down 100 years of Texas-Oklahoma
Statesman.com ^ | October 06, 2006 | John Bridges

With 100 Texas-Oklahoma games in the history books, it's time to draw a few conclusions about the Red River shootout (we still find "Red River Rivalry" to be a mouthful).

First, Texas will win Saturday 16.5 to 15.7. OK, that's not a real score, but it is the historical average for points scored in this game.

In all, the Longhorns have won 56 of the first 100 Texas-Oklahoma games. OU lays claim to 39, and five were tied.

For years, the game was known for its close outcomes. Forty-nine games have been decided by nine points or fewer. The 1996 game went to overtime.

But recent history of the shootout has produced games that are closer to blowouts. No Texas-Oklahoma game since 1998 has been decided by less than double digits.

Three games since 2000 were blowouts of 33 points or more.

If there's a true blowout this year, it's more likely to be scored by Oklahoma. The Sooners own the seven biggest victory margins in series history.

Oddsmakers have made Texas a four-point favorite for Saturday. Only 23 of the 100 Texas-OU games have been closer than that.

Though I'm not a Longhorn fan by any stretch...I am more partial to "Texas Fight" myself.

I wonder how many people are going to watch the Texas Governor's Race Debate tonight at 7. Think they picked tonight on accident?

No, I don't. Perry's folks want as few viewers as possible. He knows the other three will be ganging up on him to the exclusion of all else. I'm not really worried about it. Pretty Boy won't say anything truly stupid and the others will just look extreme mouthing half-truths.

I played against Earl in high school. Our defense got 5 concussions and lost 52-6. It was men against boys. Tyler won the State Championship and ended up with 3 players in the NFL.

"Red River Riot" would be the most accurate title for this game. Back in my youth it seemed the worst crime wave downtown Dallas faced each year was the Friday night before the game. Obnoxious drunken fans of both schools would turn Big D into one big brawl.

Here's how I see it.

Oklahoma will beat Texas.
Oregon beat Oklahoma
Cal will beat Oregon

Cal lands back in the Top Ten. ;-)

Dang, Pac 10 officials. That means I just drove south 4 hours for nothing.
The drive just caused me to realize more why I hate Texas! The traffic sucks almost as bad as the horns!!!!

You should have done what our team did. We just got out of his way.

I played against Mike Thomas, Rookie of the year for the NFL 1976, when he played for Greenville. Played against three state champions from Texas (Brownwood, Wichita Falls, and Iowa Park) and two really good teams from Oklahoma (Lawton and Altus) the same year. We still had one of the Harris Ratings top defenses in the state of Texas even though our record was 5-5. Love Texas Football......
