Not Ready to Make Nice (Dixie Chicks in Australia, STILL Whining About Free Republic)
AdelaideNow ^ | Sunday, October 8, 2006 | Kirsten Heyson

It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.

It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.

Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

SNIP

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.

An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.

The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.

"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.

"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."

In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.

"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.

"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

SNIP

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

I really only ever listened to the cross over country. But, I can't stand their traitorous ignorant speech. So I say go find your country, since this cross over listener would not care to support the Chicks.

Clara Lou: You forgot to rub your hands together with glee as you said that.

Also, growl like this: "Mua ha ha ha ha ha ha!

And your little dog too!

Does this mean that she can't count, either?

It doesn't matter, because she doesn't have as much to count as she used to.

All their bases belong to us. Resistance is futile.

The site has thousands of subscribers,

Hundreds of thousands.

"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.

Its also a known fact that we control the weather.

She's mad because we are not doing as she tells us. How dare we disagree and not buy their records or go to their concerts?

Our Founding Fathers warned us of such demagoguery and designed our Constitution to protect against such abuses by both the demagogue and those who he/she may dictate to .... Natalie obviously doesn't know the difference, or what America is all about in terms of free speech

"The Dixie Chicks have every right to express their political opinions, even in places where people have paid to hear their music, not their opinions. However, people also have every right to disagree with the opinions of the Dixie Chicks and to express their disagreements in public venues (like Free Republic) and by not buying Dixie Chicks music and concert tickets.

Politics is always a pay-to-play venue."

Agreed. And it's not just the dixie chicks. After years of traveling and too many concerts to count, I received a politically charged e-mail and promptly gave up 4 Warehouse memberships that afforded me 8 great seats at DMB shows.

Truthfully though, I wish they'd all shut up about their politics...they ought to know it's bad for business and WHATEVER they say is going to piss off at least 1/2 the population. When they do it anyway, I have difficulty getting past it and then more difficulty enjoying the music.

Silly lass! It doesn't have anything to do with music. What I wonder most is how they manage to think at all.

You are exactly right.

Am I mistaken or didn't she attend Berkeley? If so, there is a bad ad right there.
