AL-QAEDA plotted to murder the entire Australian cricket team in their change rooms during last year's Ashes tour of Britain using sarin nerve gas sprayed by the men who bombed the London Underground.

A friend of one of the four bombers who killed 52 people when they bombed trains and buses in the British capital on July 7 last year told The Sunday Times newspaper that the al-Qaeda cell was initially ordered to kill the England and Australian cricket teams during the Edgbaston Test in Birmingham.

The claim was made by a family friend of bus bomber Hasib Hussain, who killed 13 people in London's Tavistock Square. According to the 32-year-old friend, whose family has links to a terrorist training camp in Kotli in northern Kashmir, the bombers were instructed to get jobs as stewards at the Edgbaston cricket ground and to spray sarin gas inside the changing rooms.

But, of course, not warrantless telephone intercepts nor robust interrogations.

Related, from 2001 -- they tried to attack the EU Parliament with sarin gas in FEBRUARY 2001, the attack was foiled. I wonder if the same terrorists then came to the US and perpetrated the 9-11 attack.

Bin Laden British cell planned gas attack on EU Parliament

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2001/09/16/wbin16.xml

ISLAMIC terrorists based in Britain and controlled by Osama bin Laden planned a devastating attack in February on the European Parliament building in Strasbourg.

Osama bin Laden: may have as many as 5,000 supporters among young Muslims in Britain
A six-strong terror cell funded by the Saudi fugitive planned to kill all 625 Euro-MPs, and scores of officials, by releasing sarin gas into the parliament building.

The attack was scheduled to take place during the session of parliament from February 11 to 14 this year and was to be the first in a series of assaults against prominent buildings across Europe. Algerian terrorists based in London and funded directly by bin Laden worked with counterparts in Milan and Frankfurt.

The plot was foiled after German police smashed the Frankfurt operation in a series of raids. The British-based six men were arrested and charged with offences under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

The charges were subsequently dropped just days after the men appeared at Horseferry Road magistrates' court, London. The Crown Prosecution Service said that the decision was made for security reasons.

And another article from the same issue of the UK Times, Sept. 16, 2001:

Bin Laden's UK agent receives £1m legal aid

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2001/09/16/nkhal16.xml

ONE of Osama bin Laden's key aides, who is fighting extradition from Britain to the United States, has been granted as much as £1 million of taxpayers' money in legal aid.

Khalid al-Fawwaz, a Saudi Arabian on remand in Belmarsh prison, has been awarded the money to try to avoid facing allegations that he has helped organise atrocities around the world.

Documents found in Britain link him to bin Laden, the terrorist mastermind believed to be behind last week's attacks in America.

advertisementAl-Fawwaz, a Saudi citizen, is one of three suspected terrorists awaiting extradition to America on charges of involvement in the 1998 bombing of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed 250 people.

All three have avoided interrogation by the American authorities for three years and are at present in British prisons.

=======

Another reason why it's a WAR on terror, and can't be treated as a criminal issue.

Big mistake here, the Islamics attacking the sports teams,
it would be like an attempt on the Cubs or Yankees.

Attack a few citizens, no big deal, attack our national sport and now we're mad.

Memo to all Muslims:

Recommend, you avoid a frontal attack on the British, and or the Australians, as you well surely feel the bite of the Imperial Lion, whom by the way, make their own rules, as required....

Peace.

'according to a friend'. i.e. someone who took some money from a reporter. View this particular one with a pinch of salt. This team was always bombers not gassers.

I can imagine 10,000 scenario's that would have more effect and publicity than getting to the national cricket teams and I am sure the Al Quedia nuts can too. This one is right up there with the 'Old Trafford' plot in being more based in headline grabbing than in fact (although an attack on a sporting event would be an attractive target I would expect the FA cup final not the cricket!).

1/ Channel Tunnel
2/ Canary Wharf
3/Parliament
4/ The Tube (again)
5/ Houses of Parliament

Shane Warne's okker aussie larakans will seriously be about number 10001!

Vigilence always.

By now I hope you read my other posts about a planned 2001 gas attack against the EU parliament. That was no rumor.

Cricket Ping!

Many of us who followed this tremendous series between England & Australia back in the summer of 2005 had no idea what dangers lurked beneath for those fine sportsmen.

If you would like on or off the Cricket Ping list, please let me know.
