Angelides or bust: Local Dems keep the faith (and getting the voters out)
SantaCruz Sentinel ^ | Oct. 8, 2006 | GENEVIEVE BOOKWALTER

According to a poll released Monday by the Public Policy Institute of California, Schwarzenegger leads Angelides, 46 to 33 percent. Even in the notoriously liberal San Francisco Bay Area, Schwarzenegger leads Angelides 42 to 37 percent — despite the Angelides camp's attempts to link him to President George W. Bush, who sports a 25 percent approval rating in the same region.

That's why union workers and other tried-and-true Santa Cruz Democrats are joining a statewide campaign to get out the vote next week, complete with door hangers, posters and old-fashioned precinct walking. UC Santa Cruz liberals were trying to talk other students into foregoing baseball on Saturday night in favor of tuning in to the gubernatorial debate.

Local union workers, still wounded from last year's special election where Schwarzenegger tried to reign in union control, also remain optimistic about Angelides.

"We definitely feel this is a competitive race and Angelides is going to win when the dust clears on Nov. 7," said Joe Keffer, acting political director for the county's largest union, Service Employees International Union Local 415.

The Dems and unions are going to do everything to get out the vote for Angelides. Remember, what counts is not what people say when a pollster calls them, but WHO gets out and actually casts a vote.

Republicans and conservatives need to get out the vote, to counter all the union thugs -- remember that's how the special election propositions got defeated: unions got their people out, conservatives stayed home.

No real conservative would cede CA to Angelides.

After the last election, I'm pretty sure it's the exit polls that count.

No real conservative has enthusiasm for Arnold. A liberal leading in the Bay Area? Gee, what a surprise!

Even in the notoriously liberal San Francisco Bay Area, Schwarzenegger leads Angelides 42 to 37 percent...

I would have worded that "Especially in the notoriously liberal San Francisco Bay Area Schwarzenegger leads Angelides 42 to 37 percent..."

You have two big activist liberals running, one a charismatic good looking and effective liberal, and the other, a funny-looking abrasive do-nothing liberal. OF COURSE San Francisco is going to support the liberal who moves the ball of liberalism forward; global warming legislation, land grabs, anti-religious laws, no slow-down or restraint on spending, a desire to tax the rich higher on gasoline.

By the end of his next term they'll probably build a statue of him in Union Square.

The Unions seem to be way more involved in electing a Dem even if he is a dud rather than actually involving themselves in efforts to protect their jobs of the members. Republicans should be feeling confident about retaining the Governer office.

The unions do not have the solid support of their rank and file members. I know some rank and file members that made their decision back in January when the Governor proposed a wide reaching rebuilding of the infrastructure. They haven't changed their minds yet. I'll post more on this after the election.

Schwarzenegger leads Angelides 42 to 37 percent

Even absent the 13% that voted conservative in the last gubernatorial election, Schwarzenegger still leads Angelides by 2 points and each day that passes, the Austrian wins more Democrat votes through his liberal actions.

By November 7, the Austrian will likely not need any Republican votes to beat the weasel in a squeaker. The Angelides campaign will go down as the greatest, partisan boondoggle in the state's history. The 2006 election cycle will also be remarkable in that even though Angelides, the official, Democrat, gubernatorial candidate was trounced at the polls, Democrats still won the governorship by a landslide.

There you go, trying to suppress Republican and conservative votes, shamelessly campaigning for the Dems.

I'm all in favor of campaigning for legitimate conservatives. Arnold hasn't earned our support and doesn't need it to win.

For starters, he is an American citizen.

Your posts are pathetic.

When did you receive your DNC training?

That one bragged that he didn't vote in the last election.

I suspect he's a DICC.

As I've stated before just because I don't think much of Arnold does NOT mean I look with affection on Angelides. I don't endorse either one of them for Governor.

Yes, voters got turned off last year and more of them are being turned off this year. We're getting sweet nothings from the politicians and nothing much in the way of substantiative proposals to address the very real problems this state faces.

For starters, he is an American citizen.

Those pesky little details.

Anmerican is a geographic descriptor. Schwarzenegger is a United States citizen.

Schwarzenegger is also a citizen of Austria. He is an Austrian by both birth and current citizeneship.

Schwarzenegger became a naturalized US citizen in 1983. In 1983, US code precluded dual citizenship and Austrian law automatically voided Austrian citizenship if an Austrian national swore allegiance to another nation.

When Schwarzenegger was re-accorded his Austrian citizenship in 1999, through friendships, he violated the oath of sole allegiance to the United States which he had signed in 1983.

In Schwarzenegger's circumstances sticky legal questions arises. Is Schwarzenegger legally entitled to be a citizen of either the US or Austria? He violated the terms of his US naturalization in 1983 and was re-accorded his Austrian citizenship in 1999 in clear contravention to long standing, Austrian federal law.

If you are not FOR Arnold, you are FOR ANGELIDES.

If you are for Schwarzenegger, or for Angelides, you are for a liberal and in antagonism of the principles of this forum; the advancement of conservatism.

Conservatives on this forum don't participate to retard the advancement of liberalism or excuse the advancement of liberalism because of party registration.

It's not Republican v Democrat , it's Conservative v Liberal. If an account persists in advancing the candidacy of a liberal, that account, even if a house organ for the CaGOP, is of no practical value to conservatives and will certainly suffer the fate of all who practice their deception in these halls.

My advice, which certainly wasn't solicited, would be for the CaGOP to treat those on FreeRepublic with more respect. A honest approach would be more welcomed. Something along the lines of: Certainly our guy is a liberal but he's the best we have and he'll advance liberalism more slowly than his Democrat opponent.

That approach may not produce any more support for the CaGOP liberal, but it won't alienate conservatives and drive them further from the CaGOP. If the CaGOP continues its current trends it will become indistinguishable from the CaDEM, except that those gathered at the table will not be disparate racial and ethnic minorities, bound by union membership, but rather an eclectic collection of business entrepreneurs, seeking to fleece the public pocket.
