Bump
so are you saying NK faked a nuclear test?
That is a small one.
I said some Freeper would know.

North Korea says conducted nuclear test
Mon Oct 9, 2006 12:22 AM ET
By Jack Kim
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Monday it had safely and successfully carried out an underground nuclear test in a gesture of defiance as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in South Korea.
"The nuclear test was conducted with indigenous wisdom and technology 100 percent," North Korea's Korean Central News Agency said.
"It marks a historic event as it greatly encouraged and pleased the KPA (Korean People's Army) and people that have wished to have powerful self-reliant defense capability."
The report said there was no leak or danger from the test.
The U.N. Security Council last Friday urged North Korea not to carry out a test, warning Pyongyang of unspecified consequences if it did.
The dollar rose to a seven-month high against the yen after the reports but analysts did not expect long-term fallout unless the situation deteriorated further.
"The economy of North Korea is virtually closed from the rest of the world and its regional impact won't be very significant unless there was a major military confrontation," said Wang Qing, an economist at Bank of America in Hong Kong.
South Korea's presidential Blue House said a tremor of magnitude 3.58 to 3.7 had been detected in North Korea at 0135 GMT on Monday.
However, the U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity such as might be expected from a nuclear test on the Korean peninsula within the past 48 hours.
Abe, speaking in Seoul after arriving from an ice-breaking visit to Beijing, also said Japan had no confirmation of a test by North Korea.
A U.S. official said North Korea gave China a 20-minute warning of its test and China immediately told the United States, Japan and South Korea.
Officials in China had no immediate comment.
SECURITY MEETING IN SEOUL
In South Korea, President Roh Moo-hyun was holding an emergency meeting of top security officials at the Blue House following the announcement.
Tokyo backs a hard line toward Pyongyang, while Seoul and Beijing -- leery of instability on the peninsula -- have previously cautioned against backing the North into a corner.
However, all three agree that Pyongyang should end its nearly year-long boycott of six-country talks on ending its nuclear weapons program.
North Korea announced last week it would test a nuclear device saying its hand was forced by what it called U.S. threats of nuclear war and economic sanctions. But it said it would not be the first to use a nuclear weapon.
Analysts say North Korea probably has enough fissile material to make six to eight nuclear bombs but probably does not have the technology to devise one small enough to mount on a missile.
Uh, Fox is already reporting 4.2 on the Richeter scale. Also, the tons seems way too low. Sorry, not buying this report.
Assuming that report has any validity to it whatsoever.
That's only .55 kilotons.
That's small. How does that compare to the 9-11 explosions caused by 767 and 757 collisions into buildings?
It doesn't meld with what US "sources" have been telling FOX and others. They seem to indicate between 3 and 5 kiltons. That's why I'm very suspicious about this report.
Like I posted, its a fake to consolidate Kim Jong's power. He is nearing death and wants to make a legacy and a son that can continue his power. This is the small bang that supercedes his wimper.
Sorry, it's not fake.

What time was that eastcoast USA?
Even 3-5 kilotons is very small. I still think they got a partial fizzle.
It's time to send Jung Il to " Kimgdom Come"!
Ping!
38% on CNN's poll think NK has a right to conduct nuke test. Cute.
http://www.cnn.com/POLLSERVER/results/27739.exclude.html
I would be very careful about taking these numbers as gospel.
"That is a small one."
Yes, it is.
Liberals think the United States and her people should just give EVERYTHING AWAY and NEVER have anything kept secret for the good of all mankind!!!
I think that pretty obviously sucks as of today, don't you???
9:35 PM Sunday ?
I still doubt it. I think it was leading up to this, perhaps as a deadline with Tehran, and he had to show something.
This is a fake, until there are some nuclear signatures. A nuke underground has to show something, unless they buried the bomb deep underground with no interest in research or supervision, just to blow it up. The bomb blew up near the surface - at least that latest seismogram says less than a kilo under, so their should be some venting or SOMETHING.
That says plenty about CNN's viewership.
Agree it is quite small, but I think little Kim has sealed his fate. President Bush will take him out before he leaves office in January 2009.
How so?
It seems to me, just thinking logically, that the purpose of the test is to make sure the system works. The triggering or firing mechanisms and such that create the explosion. Once they have that system correct, making the bomb larger should be easier then creating it in the first place.
Where is my logic flawed?
Don't jump in thinking that its fake... it takes lots of computing power and testing to get these things to explode efficiently... lets just be happy that it looks like they are taking a conservative approach to it and not jumping right in trying to crack the earth in 1/2..
You could have fooled me.

Whaaaaat I Do Nuting Wong! Just Wittle Test!!!
Korea is 13 hours ahead of the EST, so it was 9:35 PM our EST time.
That said, I don't think it was 550 tons. I suspect around 4kt.
Put this JUST DAMN catagory Tiger
CHIA PETTTT are you still roaney?????
Sounds like a fizzle to me..............
No surprise there. 100% of CNN management and staff probably think that Little Kim has a right to nuke the White House if Bush happened to be inside it.
yeees CHIA still wevy roaney!
With respect, could "550 tons" be a typo? That's about 1/20th the yield of the Hiroshima bomb.
Then if they were testing the concept and it did explode, then the test was not a failure.
I just saw a report on CNN International that blames President Bush for this. They put a timeline on the screen that says:
JANUARY 2002:
President Bush branded North Korea as part of an "axis of evil"
OCTOBER 2002:
North Korea was discovered to be secretly enriching uranium... a violation of an agreement with the US
In other words, that cowboy Bush scared Kim into developing nukes because he thought President Bush would invade North Korea just like Afghanistan and Iraq. I know, it completely ignores all sortsa stuff but what do you expect?
Or a very bad atomic (not nuclear) device. Or a typo.
I think it's just bad information. I'll be very surprised if it turns out to be that low.
I got good idea how about invitating Chia Pet to Hollywood maybe get Sean Penn or MATT DAMONNN to start in movie together maybe sequel to Team AMerica LOL!
HEY Sean need the role I too unfortunate saw his remake of All King men IT SUCKS
Based on my knowledge of nuclear weapons, I suspect they were going for something in the 20-50 kiloton range but the bomb only went off at a fraction of that.
Well, the Trinity device was 20-21 Kt. 550 T is small by any measure, although if it were a nuclear test still notable.
Because they could easily fired off a "gun" type U235 device to show they were a "nuklar" power. There is no useful demonstration of a "triggering device" that anyone other than the monitoring engineers would be aware of.
Hey Little Kim you call this little test?
OH HELL NO
