BRUSSELS -- Radical Muslims in France's housing estates are waging an undeclared "intifada," or uprising, against the police, with violent clashes injuring about 14 officers each day.
As the Interior Ministry announced that nearly 2,500 officers had been wounded this year, a police union declared that its members were "in a state of civil war" with Muslims in the most depressed "banlieue" estates. Banlieue, which means outskirts, is the commonly used euphemism for the low-income housing projects heavily populated by unemployed youths of North African origin.
The police union said it had asked the government to provide police with armored cars to protect officers in the estates, which it said were becoming no-go zones.
The number of attacks has risen by a third in two years. Police representatives told the newspaper Le Figaro that the "taboo" of attacking officers on patrol has been broken.
Instead, officers -- especially those patrolling in pairs or small groups -- are facing attacks when they try to arrest locals.
Senior officers insisted that the problem was essentially criminal in nature, with crime bosses on the estates fighting back against tough tactics.
Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who also is the leading center-right candidate for the presidency, has sent heavily equipped units into areas with orders to regain control from drug-smuggling gangs and other organized crime rings. However, not all officers on the ground accept that essentially secular interpretation of the problem. Michel Thoomis, the secretary general of the hard-line Action Police trade union, has written to Mr. Sarkozy warning of an "intifada" on the estates and demanding that officers be given armored cars in the most dangerous areas.

They now have "no-go" zones, which means they've essentially ceded control over French territory to an enemy force. (Imagine what the US public would say if 14 US police officers per day were being violently attacked, and we stopped controlling parts of our cities to anti-US gangs?)
We know that France has consistently opposed all US military actions in the Mid East, most especially in Iraq. They were cozy with Hussein and remain so with Iran. They actively oppose whatever Israel does. I can not think of a Western power that has bent further backwards against radical islamic advances. Yet France finds themselves in this situation.
I wonder: for those who don't believe that radical islam has declared war against the West, and that it must be confronted militarily, how do they explain what's happening in France, and what would they suggest be done?
France will capitulate. Its what they do best.
France is the world's "prison b*tch". No matter what others do to them, they just lay back and let it happen.
But what's scary is that it's not just France. Britain now must notify Muslim leaders in their country before they raid the home of a suspected terrorist.
These people seem to be doing what they can to weaken themselves - it's just so frighteningly similar to what happened in WWII. Here, Europe has the perfect opportunity to stop this in its tracks. Will there be people angry at the west? Will there be innocent lives lost? Absolutely. But as WWII taught us, it's better to stop an aggressor before they become too powerful. In the crusade to avoid war at all cost, we ended up sacrificing 60 million lives.
Let's just hope Europe wakes up before it's too late.

We have many places in the U.S. that are similar but for different reasons. There is a place in Inkster MI called "Little Saigon" that the police will not go into. It is a haven for drugs, crime, etc. There are places in Detroit MI that are that way as well. The police have it rough everywhere in or near large cities. They really earn their pay every day.
True, and nobody can make a case where police should endorse "no go" zones. But there's a difference between gang/drug violence and outright rebellion.
You are correct. But how does Paris quell this uprising? In earlier times, the police would be instructed to "shoot to kill" if attacked. I'm not sure the French police are even armed. You saw what happened when the French police chased the Muslim youths into the electric power station. They had 10,000 cars a night torched. Outside of going door-to-door and deporting all non-citizens, what can they do now that they have let this boil fester?
Yes, it's a terrible situation but it's one that requires a show of force and authority.
What can they do now you ask? Plenty if they have the will. Here's a few off the top of my head...
1) Stop the welfare checks.
2) Halt immigration fron muslim nations
3) Prosecute mulsim leaders who foment this rebellion
4) Deport illegal immigrants
5) Give police orders to shoot-to-kill if attacked
6) Condemn, raze and redevelop the worst of the housing projects, providing relo support for legal, law-abiding folks.
7) Support foreign allies, like the US, in WOT to show commitment
The French are in need of real men who aren't afraid of confronting the filthy pigs from the projects.They should do whatever it takes to burn down every single building in the slums.Burn them to the ground and never let them or the scum return.
That may not work in France.
