Daley: By 2016, cameras on 'almost every block'
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 10--12-06 | FRAN SPIELMAN

Security and terrorism won't be an issue if Chicago wins the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games because, by that time, there'll be a surveillance camera on every corner, Mayor Daley said Wednesday. "By the time 2016 [rolls around], we'll have more cameras than Washington, D.C. ... Our technology is more advanced than any other city in the world -- even compared to London -- dealing with our cameras and the sophistication of cameras and retro-fitting all the cameras downtown in new buildings, doing the CTA cameras," Daley said.

"By 2016, I'll make you a bet. We'll have [cameras on] almost every block."

Via Drudge. I won't be visiting Chicago. I would rather a terrorist blow me up than every single time I pick my nose, some geek squad is watching and posting it on the internet. Safety is great. Target concerned areas, and we know we have less privacy.

EVERYWHERE is what they want. No thanks Big Brother. I will not live under you.

Who will be watching the cameras? Seems like they would do as well to station a patrolman on every corner. Of course, that would mean they would be out in the weather instead of sitting at a desk with coffee and donuts at hand.

Have no fears, the cameras will automatically turn away from illegals and Muslims.

It's not enough that the libs want all your money. They also want to keep an eye on you at every waking moment.

Did he say 2016 or 1984?

They could save a lot of money on cameras if they'd just declare martial law and shoot on-site anybody caught outside after sundown.

Perhaps they could start with Cabrini Green, and then implement city wide once resistance to the new safety measures has been completely suppressed....

How will dead people vote?

"Gee, I only saw 100 people on the monitor enter the polling facility... how did we get 1000 democrat votes?"

Can we be private anywhere now? I suppose cameras in all our bedrooms would insure that the police could see an intruder coming in too. Perhaps we can get $50 off our homeowner's policy for allowing them to watch us their too.

It is coming to that, isn't it? We can't target the problem population (Muslims), and so everyone will have to suffer the yoke of tyrrany. I fear the day will come that the America I once knew will only exist in small towns that are a hundred or more miles from the corrupting influence of her cities.

As far as those who will watch the monitors, I picture old police vice squad and homocide investigators who have seen everything, who will not be shocked or even interested in anything they see but will have to drink gallons of coffee to stay awake. Especially if they have cameras in my house.

Chicago's camera-based automated ticketing system has already generated some $16MM for the city ... some are lobbying for it to go to hiring more officers, currently it is feeding the general fund.

Ugh.

I wrote a column several years ago called "The Police State We Live In," about a friend's harassment by the Chicago PD. It was bad then. Even worse now.

If you've got nothing to hide, then you should welcome these cameras into your home to keep an eye on you.

After all...it's for your own good.

Blackmail though. Who keeps copies, and for how long. You do something stupid after stumbling out of a bar at 21, like peeing in an alley, and 20 years later you are running for congress and it gets splashed over the internets.

That is the kind of society I want to live in. We will become phonies. Not good, or better, but fake. We will have such a bogus public facade because our minders are watching us.

A good example for me is the stupid young teenage girls who flashed the cameras at Amusement Park rides, then said whoops when one of the employees posted them on line.

Their behavior was childish, but these are 18 year olds who might have to explain to their grandkids what they did. I am reminded of the Truman show. It may become reality for all of us. Somebody will always be watching.

Who will be watching the cameras? - probably no one, but if an assault occurs they can then go back, see the event, and back track the perp. I like the idea.

"What about the children!".

One of my friends has cameras in his kid's classroom, which is kind of cool. He just has to log onto the internet from work and see exactly what is going on in his kid's class. It will start there. Then it will be the entire school grounds, all public parks. It will be death of privacy by thousands of little cuts, and those who question the fact that we can't take a dump without a camera in the toilet will be considered extremists.

Like I pointed to earlier, if my choice is being filmed 24 hours a day or being possibly blown up, blow me up already.

The impression I get is that cameras aren't effective at preventing crime or terrorism. They'd be better off hiring Richard Jewell.
