Men being Men is a Bad Deal. Guys should Evolve Beyond Masculinity. By Robert Jensen

Sunday, October 8, 2006

It's hard to be a man; hard to live up to the demands that come with the dominant conception of masculinity, of the tough guy.

The problem is that alot of people, this guy included, have the impression that masculinity is all about being a testosterone fueled, boorish idiot. That ain't a man, thats an a$$hole.

My concept of masculinity is the quiet strong types, the ones who are nice, and even somewhat self deprecating at times, but who definately COULD KICK YOUR A$$. Think of the character Maximus, in the movie Gladiator. Or the main character in the TV series "Kung Fu". Stoics, yet capable of unleashing great violence when necessary. Soft speaking, but carrying a big stick..

An a$$hole is an A$$hole regardless of the gender.

"The best thing about being a male is the female."

Amen! Women add colour to what would be a drab world.

That's what all those Libtards dream about..being
the sex slaves of brutal conqurers. Can't wait
to drop their jeans, bend over, and have their
panties ripped off and be violated again and
again.

"Oooooooooh! Your such a brute!"

To live as slaves...that's the DemoLibTards
most cherished wet dxream...to be told what
to do, how to do it, how long, and how they
should feel about it...and the more degrading,
the better.

Maybe I didn't get it. It seemed to me that the guy was preaching against boorish behavior that passes for machismo, not masculinity. No one likes a jerk who's idea of manhood rests in the notion of who's ass he can kick.

From there, the argument that we need to scrap masculinity is fairly simple. To illustrate it, remember back to right after 9/11. A number of commentators argued that criticisms of masculinity should be rethought. Cannot we now see -- recognizing that male firefighters raced into burning buildings, risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to save others -- that masculinity can encompass a kind of strength that is rooted in caring and sacrifice? Of course men often exhibit such strength, just as do women. So, the obvious question arises: What makes these distinctly masculine characteristics? Are they not simply human characteristics?

The next time a building is on fire with you in it, I wish a 5'0” 80 lbs firefighter woman comes to your rescue. I'm sure you won't diminish her effort and sacrifice to save your butt from the engulfing flames. She might not have the strength of a masculine man, but she possesses the noble human characteristics that will suffice to save you from an imminent death. If in the process she fails, we can all feel proud that men and women are considered equally endowed with comparable traits and characteristics, to the exclusion of important differences.

All jokes aside, I hope masculinity never disappears. Real women like real men, and that means masculine men. I've loved the idea of real men since I was a little girl. No one told me to, it was in my mind and built into my system. Whenever I saw a movie I picked the masculine guy as the guy I liked the most... no wimpies, crybabies, or mama boys, I never liked that.

I don't necessary consider masculine men to be calendar boys with a massive body structure. They are usually gays and they totally turn me off. Sure, a nicely built man is always nice, but more importantly is the way they think, and the way they relate to women. I like guys who are courteous and sweet, as I find that to be totally masculine.

A masculine guy is a man who makes his voice heard, and I don't mean by shouting. He is a man who commands respect, who isn't a henpeck, and who doesn't listen to old ladies tales. Rather, he is able to stand for himself and think for himself. See, effeminate guys love to be around the old biddies for the latest gossip... this reminds me of a hairdresser I had a few years ago who was gay and loved to gossip with the old ladies. A real man doesn't do that.

A masculine man is protective, romantic, and courteous and as the same time tough – he doesn't waffle. My idea of masculine man is Donald Rumsfeld (he's old but he still looks good), Bibi Netanyahu, (I love Bibi.) And from the movies... I was a kid when I saw My Fair Lady and fell in love with Rex Harrison, lol, he could've been my grandfather, but I thought he was beautiful and a manly man. Also, when I saw Christopher Plummer in the Sound of Music, oh wow! John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Humphrey Bogart.

I can't think of an actor roughly my age who is a manly man. Leonardo DiCaprio, yikes! Keanu Reeves, double yikes. If we talk of older ones... Tom Cruise, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, ughhhhh you got to be kidding me. I think Damon is gay and Tom... well...

See, it's hard to measure up with the old timers.... the truly masculine men. I'm not saying there aren't masculine men nowadays, but God forbid they get swept into the current fagginess so prevalent among the elite class and the pseudo intellectuals.

On a similar note, I love truly feminine women. Women who have a good heart and a good mind and who are a compliment to a man rather than a competitor against a man in a relationship. Also, what the hell happened to fashion models? I look at movies from the 1950s and 1960s and see women who are built like women and not stick-thin, hipless waifs. I would much rather see more women look like Anne Margaret rather than Paris Hilton.

I totally agree with you. And that's my point, you can see the difference between men and women in the old days.
