WOW! North Korea is screwed! UN Sanctions, aside from being the most damaging of all weapons, are always ruthlessly enforced. North Korea will soon be on its knees. With these UN Sanctions, North Korea will be hard pressed to do much more than fund its military and its people will struggle just to be fed - they soon will no doubt begin eating tree bark. Finally, we have shown the world that we are serious about stopping nuclear proliferation. From the standpoint of a rogue regime, UN Sanctions are even worse than military strikes. It almost makes me feel bad for Kim Jung Il.

Kirkpatrick was brilliant. She's the only woman that I would even have considered for President. Kinda reminded me of Thatcher.

It's the UN and China and Russia signed off. Translation: no teeth to be found.

I wonder how long it will be before suicide bombers take to the high seas to blow themselves up in the faces of the US Navy, much like they have done at US checkpoints in Iraq.

Let's just face it. There's nothing we can do to NK without affecting all the people who are unfortunate enough to live there. They are forced to live under that evil man in conditions, IMO, that are unbelievably cruel. Whatever sanctions we take would only hurt those people more. Any aid that goes to the country will go to Kim first and his army second. The only answer is to assassinate Kim and the rest of his regime.

Yep, although he is "just" a man, (snicker) Bolton is proving that with the proper leadership, we can be an effective influence at the UN.

Kudos to Ambassador Bolton for his fine work!

There are treaties and there is war.

I don't understand this comment. There are an infinite number things besides treaties and war. Countries have varying levels of business with each other. This UN resolution simply imposes sanctions by countries which is not an act of war. So the term "punish" is a correct term for this.

We might very well see something like this unfold...

Kim ignores the resolution as illegal, a cargo ship with tanks/missile parts destined for Yemen/Iran etc. sets sail.

US/Japanese naval vessel attempts to stop and inspect the ship.

Warning shot fired after ship fails to stop.

NK special forces unit aboard the ship fires an anti-ship missile from the deck.

US/Japanese vessel retaliates and sinks the North Korean ship.

North Korea declares war.

This is the key, nations can inspect, not the UN itself. Also, this calls Kim's bluff regarding his "act of war" talk and is a huge loss of face for him. This is how you whack crazy people, you goad them to self-destruct.

Much as I dislike the UN, you'll get no knee-jerk bad reaction from me on this one, this is good news for Bush, good news for America, bad news for Dems, and bad news for Kim. Notice how it all lines up nicley, as always?

Can't wait to hear Kim stomp his widdle foot.

North Korea declares war every 2 months. Nothing new there.

The North Koreans are insane, so they will indeed do something nuts in response to getting ships stopped and boarded.

I would bet that they won't stop...which will require us to disable them. I bet they will resist when boarded. I would not be surprised if they didn't pack a ship full of explosives and try to blow up themselves and the boarding parties.

They have pulled nutso stuff before for no apparent reason.

Yes. Thanks to John Bolton. I'd like to know how he did this.

If North Koreans were insane then there would already be war. Kim isn't stupid...he knows EXACTLY how far to push things. He always has and always will. He will not bring about war. It just won't happen. He wants money and so on. There won't be a war. Kim is a joke.

Iran on the other hand...I predict war within six months. Israel.
