This is not how much they are worth...just how much money they have in the bank.
And I wonder how much money they had when they first came to Washington...

And I wonder how much money they had when they first came to Washington...The Doles are from modest means, Bob from very, very modest means. They aren't any longer.

That is the point worth making. How many of these people left office far richer than when them came. How many went into politics poor and retired rich?
How many, like Lyndon Johnson came out of Texas a poor teacher and died a multimillionaire? They only job he ever jad was om gpverm,emt/

.. and that's just their onshore accounts.
To: P-40
If it covered "intangible" assets: For what their names and future earning power are worth, in reality the Clintons would make the list.

They come to Washington poor; they leave wealthy. We have the best politicians money can buy.

I call BS
they include Rumsfeld as a "politician", but leave off Clinton who shares a net worth with her hubby of several hundred millions.

Same way with Bill Clinton and wife.
In Arkansas, they didn't even own a house. They lived in the Governor's residence.
Now, their combined wealth is in the multi-millions.

This reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit where they spoofed the Republican Presidential Debates. Dan Akroyd played Dole and Dana Carvey played Bush 41.
Dole (Akroyd):"Bob Dole didn't grow up with the fancy colored television or the automatic dishwasher like my good friend George Bush over there. Bob Dole didn't have the two car garage or the gasoline lawnmower like my friend Pete Dupont(Kevin Nealon). And why do you call yourself Pete when your name's Pierre? Your name is Pierre isn't it Pierre?"
Bush (Carvey): "Now wait a doggone minute Bob! You can say what you want about me but quit pickin my friend Pete over there! Your a millionaire yourself Bob and I'm not so sure that money was made on the up and up!
Dole: "How would you like this pen shoved into your neck?
Bush:I'd like to see you try it!

The wealthier they are when they come to Washington, the less likely they are to be corrupt, in general - always exceptions, of course.
It's quite a dilemma for people that want Congress to be "like them" - the problem is when you elect someone who has an average income or financial situation to Congress, where they then have the power to influence billions of dollars in Government spending, the temptation is often too much.

I suspect you'd find most of the people, especially at the top of the list, were independently wealthy before ever entering Congress - Herb Kohl, for example, is from the Massive-Department-Store-Chain Kohl's.

That may be true to some extent. John Kerry sat in the Senate and did almost nothing for 19 years, until he decided to run for the WH in 04. He has authored and co-authored more legislation since the 2004 than he did the previous 19 years combined.
