China may back coup against Kim
The Sunday Times ^ | October 16, 2006 | Michael Sheridan

THE Chinese are openly debating "regime change" in Pyongyang after last week's nuclear test by their confrontational neighbour.

Diplomats in Beijing said at the weekend that China and all the major US allies believed North Korea's claim that it had detonated a nuclear device. US director of national intelligence John Negroponte circulated a report that radiation had been detected at a site not far from the Chinese border.

Bush probably told China if you'll get rid of Kim, we'll send the food to keep the NK people at home in NK.

While I can't blame China for at least entertaining the possibility, it would be a tragedy for the people of North Korea to go from the iron fist of Kim Jong-Il to the iron fist of China, even if China is a bit more monied.

Even Putin has warned Kim, saying that his KGB may pull a Ceaucescu and assassinate him, if he doesn't play by the rules.

This could prove to be a major win-win for both China, the region, and the US. Not Kim, however.

First of all, China could invade and conquer Nork quickly and secure any and all nuclear products and weapons. This would avoid the destruction of Seoul from the Norks massed artillery. Hopefully, China would have convinced several Nork generals to surrender quickly.

Now, if China gave some guarantees to the US ahead of time, and everybody soothed the Skors, some very good things could come out of this for everybody concerned.

First, China could set up a puppet government in Nork, then quickly pull back its armed forces. This would defuse the situation, both for the Skors and the US.

Then, this puppet government would begin immediate reunification talks with Skor. From this point on, China wins big.

By helping them to reunify, Korea becomes China's best friend in the whole world. Not only that, but they no longer have to fret about Nkor illegals entering China--in fact most Koreans living in China would be thrilled to go home.

Next, China gets a major trading partner worth billions to them every year. And there would actually be little reason for contention, from the Chinese point of view, because Korea already does things "the Chinese way"; so it is tolerable to have them on the border.

In other words, Korea would be much like Hong Kong and Macau in relation to China.

Being peacefully in the sphere of China, the US could gladly leave Korea, *saving* us billions of dollars every year, and still probably get an agreement that would allow us to park our ships in Pusan when they were passing by.

I'm sure that lots and lots of side deals would be part of the big package, such as Taiwan and Japan losing all interest in nuclear weapons again. But just about everywhere would be sweetness and light.

The universe would again be in balance.

Are these (N.Korean) guys still back in the 1960's? Man, even 1980's Soviet propaganda looks better than that.

It's commies light, in place of commies-heavy. That in itself is an improvement. In light of Skorea's endless appeasement of the thugs of the north, the China solution ought to be something they should swallow and too bad if they dont like it. They didn't do anything to fix the situation themselves so they can just eat it as China takes care of business.

Of course if they have a plan of their own to topple the Kim regime, so much the better. But they don't want to pay the cost, they think it will be too much and they want someone else to pay. They just don't get to always choose who that someone else will pay.

Eat it, South Korea. You haven't done jack. China will take out the trash since you did nothing.

Same with Russia. Russia and China don't want an arms race near their country, and don't like the prospect of a nuclear armed Japan and South Korea, not to mention prepositioned US nuclear forces in the region.

China does not want to own NK. They don't want the bill for keeping the lights on and feeding the starving people.
It must be a bitch to have a country no one wants.

Kim works for China. I'm sure everything he has done has Chinese approval. This is posturing.

Yep.

But man, I think that it is pretty efective propaganda.
Not to be fooled by beliving that N Koreans will topple their dictator just like that. Thing is we know nothing about their morale and ralationship with dictator.

It is stalemat. if USA attacks, at least 2,000,000 starved refugees will eat-up South Korea like lokusts. If USA sits still, they will continue with their programme of nuke building...

But concidering China... never, ever underestimate them. We dont know what they REALY want...
At least, we know that Chinas and N Koreans whishes are same... get ridd of USA from Asia. One way or the other.

I belive that China would enjoy if USA attacks Korea. it will be another long war, with USA spending millions of $ just to feed N Koreans while they are car-bombing USA soldiers...

Lets never repeat McArthurs misstake when in Korean war said:"China will not intervena in Korea"...

China is mysthery...

Actually South Korea absorbing North Korea even after this Chinese arranged 'regime change' would be a mixed blessing for the South.
Look how the unification of East & West Germany perturbed the German economy. (It also brought a lot 'care-for-me-for-life' ex-communist slugs into the German political system. The exception being Merkel!) Germany had to absorb a 1960's industrial society. South Korea would have to absorb a society that is probably functioning at the medieval level of existence.

I bet it too!

It is SAME like prior to Korean War:

1. Chineese wanted to take Taiwanm but hey were too weak
2. Russians wanted to chase of USA from asia, but USA hade nukes.

SO:

They trained and equiped N Korean army and let them attack South korea.

Usa intervened, and abowe was prooven to be correct when 150,000 Chineese attacked UN troops. Russian WWII aces were flying MiGs woth N Korean insignia.

1. Russian tactitc: warn-out, bleed-out USA, open as many chrissis as possible

2. Chineese tactic, stall and keep USA as far from taiwan as possible, give them another crissis.

True, but there is large probolem:

There is substantial number of South koreans that pretty much hate Americans. They are mostly young people, antionalists that demand unification, even under communism.

READ THIS:

The Evolution in anti-Americanism in South Korea: From
Ideologically Embedded to Socially Constructed:

http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/korean/ksaa/conference/papers/07NicoleRisse.PDF

Excerpt:

During the last decade, anti-Americanism has gained popularity due to across
the board factors, which affect the common folk: the economic crisis, American
pressure on the Korean government to open the Korean market, and the antipathy
towards a growing influence of American culture which threatens the existence of
Korean traditions. This new trend of anti-Americanism is implied when talking about
socially constructed anti-Americanism because a greater part of the Korean
population shares the sentiment in opposition to a few students and scholars during
the Cold War period. Another difference is that during the Cold War period but
particularly during the 1980s, the expression of anti-Americanism was much more
outspoken and violent than today although it was not supported (at least not openly)
by the majority of the people. These days, many more people criticise the U.S.
without expressing it violently any more. What is the significance of violence or lack
of here? Korea is no longer a developing country, but rather a major economic power;
materialism and capitalism have taken over, and Korea, as well as the Korean people,
wants to be treated as an equal. Although many people oppose a strong American
influence and wish to be seen as equal, they have for the most part matured beyond
violent clashes. Hence, anti-Americanism has reached a higher intellectual level
where people try not to be as emotional but more rational, expressing their feelings
and critiques rather with words than with acts of violence

The most interesting part of the article is the allegation that three coup attempts have taken place against Kim, all but unknown in the West.
