Non-Essential computer use? Who determines what is non-essential computer use?

So would Freeping first thing in the morning, alone...make me an addict?
To: uptoolate
Well...just because we have wireless doesn't mean we have to bring the laptop into the bathroom...uh...does it?

The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested. Emphasis above is mine. Oh great, more hysteria from the press - now we should worry about over-doing it on the Internet... Hmm, you don't think they want to make people feel guilty about the Internet so we'll turn back to MSM for our "news?"
Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use."
The findings backed those of previous, less rigorous studies, according to Stanford.
Since when is a simple phone survey considered a "rigorous" study?
Most disturbing was the discovery that some people hid their Internet surfing, or went online to cure foul moods in ways that mirrored alcoholics using booze, according to the study's lead author, Elias Aboujaoude.
Oh wow... I use the gym and weightlifting to relieve stress... Does that mean it is problematic? What exactly is "the problem" with finding a means of coping with foul moods or stress? So what if that means is the Internet?

"According to preliminary research, the typical Internet addict was a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use." It sure beats shooting, stabbing or beheading someone.

You can have my DSL when you pry it from my cold dead hands. LOL! I'll see your DSL modem, and raise you one cable modem, router, server, two other desktops and a WiFi laptop..... oh, and a web capable cell phone....
But I can quit anytime I want... really!
