Whatever may be said of Picasso as a person, there is no doubt in my mind that he was brilliant at what he did. He had an amazing eye. He could slice an image into different planes, deftly rotating and merging them into a new image that was almost abstract in its simplicity at first glance. But if you gaze for a while at the painting under discussion, you begin to see far more complexity. Are there actually two women in this painting? Or is there just one who is perhaps a little too enamored of herself? He's making plenty of statements in this painting, most of them of little value to me personally. But the way he puts them across does honor to art. In my opinion, of course.

I showed the picture to my girlfriend this morning to see what she saw in the painting.

She saw what I did, but only after I pointed it out. Her first thought was that it is definitely two women in the picture and one of them is half male. The difference in the breasts, the hands and arms.

Now if it is supposed to represent two persons and one is male, or part male, perhaps what I saw was something the artist intended to be seen?

What man face down? When I first looked at that painting, all I saw was the two faced woman (duplicitous?) or was she wanting to turn (change her opinion?) yet she was too drowsy (lazy, ignorant?).

I'm enjoying reading both of your comments on this thread and although I don't know much about art, I do know what I love. I had the opportunity of seeing my favorites up close and personal, the impressionists. CM is my favorite although I really enjoy all of them.

I lingered in front of each of these paintings for a very long time because I actually felt the four seasons which were portrayed in the exhibit. I kept walking from one painting to the next then back again to see if it was some mind over matter effect, or if the gallery had different temperature settings or fans going. No, I really felt Summer heat, then the Winter is where I felt/heard silence and felt chilled, then Spring and my nose actually started itching.

Art evokes feelings, emotions, memories and sometimes good discussion.
