Michigan unemployment rate remains at 7.1 percent

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan's unemployment rate remained at 7.1 percent in September, state officials said Wednesday.

The latest seasonally adjusted rate was the same as the August rate and remains among the country's highest. The national jobless rate was 4.6 percent in September.

Michigan's September rate was six-tenths of a percentage point higher than the September 2005 rate of 6.5 percent.

Rick Waclawek, director of the state's Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, said the state's overall job decline in 2006 can be traced to cutbacks in manufacturing. The state's service sector recorded job gains this year, he said.

Michigan posted a net gain of 6,000 leisure and hospitality jobs and 4,000 health services jobs in September, according to a monthly survey of employers. But that was nearly offset by 6,000 fewer government jobs and 2,000 fewer trade, transportation and utilities jobs.

Other major industry sectors did not change much over the month.

Total employment increased by 22,000 in September, the second largest monthly gain in 2006. The number of nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 2,000 to total 4.36 million.

Since a year ago, payroll jobs have declined by 33,000, or 0.7 percent. Manufacturing lost 38,000 jobs, retail trade was down 15,000, and government dropped by 11,000.

There were 18,000 more jobs in the professional and business services sector than a year ago, education and health services increased by 8,000, and leisure and hospitality services rose by 3,000.

State officials said several major industry sectors either matched or recorded their largest job totals of 2006 in September. Government employment, however, continued its downward trend. September was the sixth month this year that the sector lost jobs.

But yeah, by all means Michigan vote to re-elect Grenholm and Stabenow. On their watch, Michigan has remained the only state to still have a net loss of jobs since 2000. Every other state has a net gain of jobs and most are prospering to a greater or lesser degree. Not this haven of Democratic governance. But the idiots will just blame Bush and re-elect these incompetent Democrats who have done nothing to improve Michigan's economy.

As Bouchard, Stabenow's opponent so aptly put it, Michigan is in a single state recession while the rest of the nation is prospering. Good job Jennifer and Debbie!

Granholm & Stabenow may get re-elected, unfortunately.

Both DeVos & Bouchard are running inept campaigns.

Makes sense to me (sarc).

High unemployment/taxes and no end in sight under a Democrat = re-elect, baby.

Stock market at 12,000, inflation at 4%, interest rates and taxes low and holding, GDP in overdrive, homeland safe...all under a Republican president and congress = throw the bums out.

To quote that Russian comedian:

"What a country."

I was impressed by Bouchard's debate performance the other night. I don't know much about the campaign he's run. It's a shame it's been less than up to par.

Perception=reality. The news media are still dominated by left-liberals. No Republican can ever achieve and no Democrat can ever fail.

Could a lot of the state's problems be attributed to the loss of union jobs, especially in the automobile sector?

I wonder if a large portion of the union jobs in Michigan will eventually phased out and either outsourced in a foreign factory or reborn in a southern state.

Do you guys see any way to fix Michigan (and Ohio) without the unions pretty much dissolving?

"Do you guys see any way to fix Michigan (and Ohio) without the unions pretty much dissolving?"

Part of the answer lies in an exchange I heard between a Granholm spokesperson and DeVos early in the race. When the line about Granholm bringing in 1000 new jobs to Michigan was repeated Devos countered by saying that Granholm wooed the company with a special package of incentives. He said that it would be better for Michigan to have a favorable business evironment all the time so businesses would want to open shop in Michigan without a lot of special deals to help make it worth while.

Michigan is even more hostile to business than Louisiana was when I lived there.

There is a 30% annual inventory tax in Michigan!!! That is a HUGE business killer.

The state is clearly on the wrong side of the Laffer curve. If they cut taxes they would definitely increase state tax revenues. Too many people are liberally brainwashed here to ever let that happen though.

Michigan as a far-left heavily unionized state is a hybrid between the US and France, which has 9% unemployment. The more socialism, the worse for the economy. Which way does America want to go in November?

Yes, and it's ironic that Detroit and the other auto cities have always supported the Democrat (Socialist) party.

Even today thousands of retired auto-workers with pensions higher than most people earn, living in condos in Vail, Co, beach houses in Clearwater, and traveling the world, still support the very ones who have kicked them again and again. This is terminal ignorance.

BTW, part of the reason for the high unemployment rate in the Detroit area is due to the higher number of Muslims living there. Detroit is A-Rab city.

We know Muslims don't work but spend their time dancing in the streets cheering the terrorist' on.

7.1 and on the way up.

I left that hole last spring and will NEVER go back. Sad part is that the UP is mostly conservative and has to dance to the tune that the lower half plays.

I wonder how many have left since these bastards gained power. The next census should be interesting.

A large part of Michigan's problems stem from its reliance on the auto industry. You could probably say that the problems of the auto industry obscure Michigan's harsh climate for business in general. Google "Single Business Tax" and weep.

Detroit is a Third World Country in many ways, but the Arabs (in Dearborn) have nothing to do with it.

The UP should be its own state. Seriously, I've been to the UP plenty of times and it's nothing like Lower Michigan. The Constitutional provision that bans new states from being formed within another state doesn't apply to the UP, as it is separate land.
