French police face 'permanent intifada'

By JAMEY KEATEN, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 15 minutes ago

On a routine call, three unwitting police officers fell into a trap. A car darted out to block their path, and dozens of hooded youths surged out of the darkness to attack them with stones, bats and tear gas before fleeing. One officer was hospitalized, and no arrests made.

The recent ambush was emblematic of what some officers say has become a near-perpetual and increasingly violent conflict between police and gangs in tough, largely immigrant French neighborhoods that were the scene of a three-week paroxysm of rioting last year.

One small police union claims officers are facing a "permanent intifada." Police injuries have risen in the year since the wave of violence.

National police reported 2,458 cases of violence against officers in the first six months of the year, on pace to top the 4,246 cases recorded for all of 2005 and the 3,842 in 2004. Firefighters and rescue workers have also been targeted — and some now receive police escorts in such areas.

On Sunday, a band of about 30 youths, some wearing masks, forced passengers out of a bus in a southern Paris suburb in broad daylight Sunday, set it on fire, then stoned firefighters who came to the rescue, police said. No one was injured. Two people were arrested, one of them a 13-year-old, according to LCI television.

More broadly, worsening violence in France testifies to Europe's growing struggle to integrate its ethnic minorities. Some mainstream European politicians — adopting positions previously confined largely to far-right fringes — are suggesting that the minorities themselves are not doing enough to adapt to European mores.

In Britain, former Foreign Minister Jack Straw, now leader of the House of Commons,

In France, a high school teacher received death threats, forcing him into hiding, after he wrote a newspaper editorial in September saying Muslim fundamentalists are trying to muzzle Europe's democratic liberties.

Gee, thanks guys, for proving my point. Why not behead me while you're at it?

Yeah, instead of issuing death threats like they do, just fight back at the moment with deadly force.

On another thread one alert FReeper had an excellent idea: strategic redeployment, because after all the French police are only creating more thugs by invading their territory.

the rioters are French-born muslim children of immigrants.

They would have to deport the entire families.

Scarcasm? Well maybe....

Or could it be Schaudenfreude?

Hopefully they'll learn a lesson while they're still time to keep their country from becoming the La Republique Islamique de France.

The French are simply paralyzed by two competing motivations: the desire for social stability versus the desire to appear multicultural and uncritical of non-white races. Which desire will win out? Self interest or the imputed guilt of multiculturalism?

Larger, more mainstream police unions sharply disagree that the suburban unrest has any religious basis. However, they do say that some youth gangs no longer seem content to throw stones or torch cars and instead appear determined to hurt police officers — or worse.
"First, it was a rock here or there. Then it was rocks by the dozen. Now, they're leading operations of an almost military sort to trap us," said Loic Lecouplier, a police union official in the Seine-Saint-Denis region north of Paris. "These are acts of war."

The first step in reality therapy for these dopes in denial is to identify and name the "they" of which Lecouplier speaks. Name them ... by individual monikers and by the groups they belong to. You will see how silly it is to deny the religious jihad in your country.

"suggesting that the minorities themselves are not doing enough to adapt to European mores."

My common sense says that if you relegate certain groups to closely confined quarters, such as housing projects, the only thing you manage to do is pool pathologies. Everyone knows that if you want to change your lifestyle, you have to change your associations first of all. Since the French wanted the "youths" out of sight, out of mind. Since they set up a labor situation which effectively cuts out youth from integrating, since they maintain a national attitude of superiority and (evidently) scoff at people learning French, then it seems they have only themselves to blame for the lack of integration of their immigrants. (Not that Muslims need any encouragement to avoid integration but France has definitely made it easier for them to remain "apart".)

We need to learn some lessons from this. I don't think as a society here we should encourage immigrant clustering if we can avoid it. We should be setting the stage for the second generation immigrants to move into the mainstream/ I grew up next to an Indian Reservation. I remember a panel discussion in high school by some of the Indian students who said it was extremely difficult to not only leave the reservation (partly because of the benefits tied to reservation residence) but also to even start to integrate into mainstream society while still living on the reservation. Any Indian caught "acting white" was ostracized by the tribe. Even if they just used some of the BIA money to build themselves a decent house, it was enough to destroy their social standing in the tribe. The kids were strongly discouraged from participating in extra-curricular activities such as sports and clubs. It was sad and many of those same youths who spoke to us either committed suicide or ended up in jail. I can think of only one who actually escaped the tribal trap, or at least I think she did. It has been many years since I have lived there.

The point is, you need a welcoming society and support from immigrant (or native) elders to really integrate. Our nation needs to start seriously integrating all immigrants and native Americans if we want to have a peaceful society in the future. (And without trying to stir up a hornet's nest, yes I favor abolishing the reservation system and sovereignty issues with Indian tribes.)

When is France going to finally "GET IT"? These "youths" are not interested in integrating into French society. They want French society to bend to their will. Time to clean house France!!!!

Give them 48 hours to get out of France then start burning down the ghettoes with them in their houses.

f the Muz want Sarkozy elected this is the way to accomplish it.

The way things are going I think that Sarkozy has a lock on the presidency.

And when he takes over I hope that he loads up a lot of ships outward bound. We here in America need a good precedent to follow.

Just consider me an anti-multi-culti. Any culture worth saving doesn't need crutches. The good parts of a culture will survive in a new environment and, hopefully, the bad parts adapt or fall away. Hothouse culture maintenance is a recipe for disaster eventually.
