1968 : (AVIATION / INTELIGENCE : OXCART PROGRAM TERMINATED IN FAVOR OF SLOWER SR-71) OXCART was terminated in favor of an Air Force modification - the SR-71. That plane carried a 2-man crew rather than just a pilot and flew somewhat slower (Mach 3.0) than OXCART - although it carried a greater variety of sensors. The replacement of the OXCART with the SR-71 in 1968 was the result of a multi-year bureaucratic battle involving the CIA, Air Force, National Reconnaissance Office, and Bureau of the Budget.

The agent, who is not identified by name in the reports noted by Mitrokhin, had a wide circle of influential contacts in the Democratic Party: among them Governor Jerry Brown of California, Senator Alan Cranston, Senator Eugene McCarthy, Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator Abraham Ribicoff, Senator J. William Fulbright and Congressman John Conyers, Jr. During the 1976 Presidential campaign the agent was able to provide inside information from within the Carter camp and a profile of Carter himself, which were particularly highly valued by the Centre since it had so few high-level American sources.

Am only just now following what has been written and discussed here - but when news came out of Anna Politkovskaya's assassignation and I read subsequent articles about current political movements in Russia, my mind went back to what I remember being discussed on FR about Clinton's visit as well. Would be interested to go back and found out if the people named in the quote had any workings/dealings with WJC's political career leading up to and throughout WJC's bid for presidency. Until his visit to the USSR is fully explained, he will always have the stink of treason.

Bill, you may find my #179 interesting.

A more detailed timeline -

John Winant, old time Red, replaced Old Joe on October 22, 1940 as Ambassador to Great Britain.

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/rcambex.html

It is commonly held that Joe Kennedy Sr. was replaced by Roosevelt because Old Joe was very publicly saying that Britain was beyond hope and that America should stay out of the European war.

The Moscow Line from the Ribbentrop - Molotov military alliance pact until the June 1941 invasion or the Soviet Union by Hitler was pro-Hitler. The United States was to kept out by all Communist means of the "European War".

So far Old Joe Kennedy meets the "quacks like a duck" test.

Joe Jr. and JFK joined the military, certainly at Old Joe's urging, in late 1941. (Unfortunately I cannot find the exact date.) JFK could not enlist because of his back injury and other health problems and Old Joe had to pull strings to get John a health waiver. This probably took a month or two. So JFK had to be trying to enlist in September or October of 1941 at the latest, that is, a matter only of weeks after the changed Communist Party Line followed Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union. The Moscow Line shifted from an isolationist to an all out pro-war position in the USA overnight.

So, we have "Quacks like a duck" and now we have "Walks like a duck". So therefore we are seeing a duck, right? Certainly enough evidence to persuade an intelligence analyst something was fishy.

Hi, Alkhin!--sent you a FReepmail! :-)

Off the top of my head, Clinton's main early antiwar contacts were with Fulbright and his staff, the Vietnam Moratorium Committee (VMC), the Oxford antiwar group I mentioned in the earlier post from Thomas, a family he knew in Czechoslovakia (IIRC), and later, the antiwar movement at Yale. Fulbright was in the antiwar movement a few years before Tunney got involved with it and knew some of the same people the Kennedys did in the Senate antiwar bloc, but I think Clinton probably didn't get too close to the KGB until after he got involved with the VMC and went to Oxford and joined the VMC's counterpart there, and he was probably handled by a different network during that phase of his career than that Tunney seems to have drifted towards later in the 70s with Karr, etc. It's possible Clinton was pointed in that direction by someone he met through Fulbright, who probably had KGB agents hovering around him among Senate staffers (IIRC the FBI had a file on his contacts with Communist-bloc embassies in Washington while he was conducting his antiwar hearings--they documented that his speeches were influenced by Communist propaganda but they weren't able to prove any specific espionage activity, is my recollection); and this person hypothetically may have later become one of Tunney's contacts in Washington, but I have no specific evidence of that (just thinking out loud here as I try to address the issue you raise), and if it happened I think it's probably somewhat of a tangent from the main vector of Clinton's path. I think Clinton likely was pointed towards his path by hanging around the VMC and got in progressively deeper from there after he went to Oxford and Yale. Now when he was at Yale he and Hillary did develop some contacts with the Kennedys' extended circle through faculty members involved in the Watergate investigation and Church Committee-related developments, which probably brought them into contact with some of the people hanging around Kennedy and Tunney in Washington. Whether these contacts included any KGB agents linked to Tunney I don't know.

But there may be a point of contact with Hillary rather than Bill. The anonymous KGB agent described in the document which is the focus of my article was apparently run from the San Francisco KGB residency, which I believe was housed in the Soviet embassy and was the center of KGB activity on the West Coast. During one summer when she was at Yale, Hillary went out to California and interned with a pair of Communist lawyers, Robert Treuhaft and Jessica Mitford, who had strong ties to the ACLU in the San Francisco area. I think it's likely whoever was running the KGB agent discussed in my article would've had at least supervisory responsibility for any KGB activities linked to Treuhaft and Mitford. Now I don't know if Treuhaft and Mitford were very close to any specific KGB activity--CPUSA certainly but not necessarily KGB (possibly Cuban intelligence, though--their son works on Cuban-related stuff)--but if there was anything going on it might have involved the same SF-based KGB network that handled the agent who is the focus of my post.

That's a lot of yakking for not answering your question, probably, LOL, but those are my thoughts FWIW.

Thanks for your follow-up. JFK's Wikipedia entry says the back injury enlistment obstacle you mention occurred in spring '41; also I recall that JFK had published his book on Pearl Harbor the previous year. I think his father was probably more concerned about grooming him for a future political career than in making sure he followed his own political positions. I'm not aware of any evidence in Joseph or JFK's FBI files indicating any Communist connections during this period, and there were extensive security reviews of both of them so I'd think it'd have been noted. At this time the intelligence community--both British and US--was mainly concerned about Joseph's Nazi ties, and there was also a scandal with JFK having a romantic relationship with a Nazi spy, Inga Arvad, in 1942. As far as I know (off the top of my head anyway--I could be forgetting something) JFK didn't pick up any strong left-wing associations until he started running for President and taking advisor recommendations from former members of the FDR/Truman State Department, which had of course been heavily compromised.

Tunney was one of the dumbests member of the Senate I ever saw. He would be the perfect dupe.

Cranston - only a full congressional investigation and hearings will ever uncover his role of associations with the Communist Party, his hiring of CP members and spies (Karr), his possible role in the murder of anti-communist labor leader Carlos Tresca, and his role in the Office of War Information during WW2. Also his connections to the Institute for Pacific Relations, a heavily CPUSA and possibly Soviet-infiltrated and influenced propaganda operation.
Cranston's list of Hollywood Red friends would shock you, including the late John Randolph who headed the KGB front, the National Council for Soviet-American Friendship, among other fronts.
Tom Hayden - Watergate derailed the Senate investigation/hearings scheduled on Hayden and Fonda as No. Vietnamese agents of influence.
There is an FBI document from 1970 which listed Sen. Kennedy and his office as one of the prime targets of Soviet KGB penetration/influence operations. This document will be written about within the next week or so.

Communist influence in Congress has only had the tip of the iceberg of exposure. John Conyers is now the leading holding of communist fronts, affiliations, and KGB-contacts of all the members of congress since Abzug and Dellums and Crockett. Image what will happen if he becomes chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Well done! Ironically, I missed this thread yesterday and ran across it (on Google, no less), while researching the Kennedys' Angola/oil/communist support connection. Please ping me with anything else you find.

A pleasure to have such informed input on the thread :-)

I have wondered about Cranston's OWI background myself. I voiced some thoughts on that in this thread, replying to another poster's comments on Cranston [links embedded in original thread]:

Bob Kerrey and Max Cleland Call for Karl Rove's Resignation

[Quoting Deb:] Anyone who even passed Cranston in the hall was a Commie.

[My reply:] ROFL! Yep, Cranston was one of the "usual suspects". Incidentally he got his start in government in the Office of War Information, which was riddled with Soviet agents (The Secret World of American Communism, by Harvey Klehr, John Earl Haynes, and Fridrikh Igorevich Firsov: "The party managed to penetrate both the Office of Secret Services (OSS) and the Office of War Information (OWI), where, according to party leader Eugene Dennis, it played a key role in shaping policy..."), under Archibald MacLeish, whose name shows up a lot in this context (Archibald MacLeish: "MacLeish's FBI file eventually ran to six hundred pages, longer than any other writer in the United States. . .In October 1952 Joseph McCarthy claimed that MacLeish had belonged to more Communist front organizations than any man he had investigated."):

Alan Cranston Interview: Conversations with History; Institute of International Studies, UC Berkeley

[Interviewer's question to Cranston:] During the war you worked for the government under Archibald McLeish?

[Cranston:] Yes, I did.

[Interviewer:] Tell us about that. It was bringing groups into an understanding of the American story, is that right?

[Cranston:] I had worked for a little while before the war began, after I came back to America, for an organization called Common Council for American Unity that was trying to help immigrants adjust to American life, and America to adjust to having immigrants among us. So I was working with German Americans, Italian Americans, Polish Americans, everything you could think of. When the war began, President Roosevelt appointed Archibald McLeish to head the Office of Facts and Figures, which was soon replaced by something headed by a famous commentator of those days, Elmer Davis, called the Office of War Information. I was given the responsibility of running the foreign language division which had the task of explaining how price control worked, how the draft worked and so forth, in foreign languages via press or radio to foreign language speaking groups.

Very interesting information on Hayden--I had not even heard such hearings were scheduled, though I recall Ambassador Graham Martin expressing sentiments along those lines about Hayden, Don Luce, et al, which is a subject I know you're very familiar with. I look forward to the article on attempts to influence Kennedy--please let me know when that posts. I share the concern on Conyers.

Joe Kennedy, Sr. was an avowed anti-communist and an anti-semite (I believe he said something to the effect that there were a few good Jews). But, I believe the smell of money was too great. The Kennedys had a legacy that "must survive." I believe they exploited Angola for personal gain.

Thank you. Have been busy reading the entire thread. It's time this be brought out in the open. Like I said, I want to know how much the Kennedys have made on Angolan oil...what the Clinton connection is and what the Soros connection is with the Tunney family. Will let you know what I find.
