But I shouldn't have been surprised.
This, of course, was simply the only element that fell into the MSM's fixed, unalterable and utterly incurious "template" of the Regensburg flap. The affair was only about Muslim outrage, the Pope's putatively aggressive offense, and the Pope's need to apologize therefore.
Of course the Pope's main agenda was to initiate dialog. The fact that dozens of the world's leading Islam religious scholars respectfully accepted the Pope's offer, well THAT doesn't fit the MSM's template. So the substance and significance of this letter is COMPLETELY IGNORED.
Thanks to the Pope, Now We're Talking ^ |

Thirty-eight Muslim scholars and chief muftis, from across the Muslim world, jointly replied to the Pope's speech at Regensburg (and more have associated their names with this document, since). It was presented to the Vatican's envoy at Amman; the full text in English is available through the Islamica magazine website, the Catholic website, Chiesa, and elsewhere. I look through the list of signatories, and they are a "who's who" of the learned leaders of a faith that has always aspired to be led by its most learned. --snip--The signatories renounced and condemned violence... |
...nice positive and encouraging article. ...clearly not a part of the corrupt MSM. Here is a link to a related analysis in the Asia Times about the positive response of the Muslim clerics:

I think the ball is in their court. Until the views expressed by those 38 represent the dominant view in Islam it will be at war with the rest of the world.
Wow..I can't believe I missed this. I have been praying for something like this since 9/11.

Islamic scholars dissent with Pope - cordially
Posted on 10/17/2006 by Teófilo
It is my hope that His Holiness considers the Muslim scholars' letter seriously. I have held that as soon as mobs began to gather, the pope's primary duty was to do whatever he could to defuse the situation, for the safety of his flock (short of denying dogmatic truths or doing/suggesting anything immoral). Unfortunately, the Vatican has done little in this regard, and that little was done quite late and quite ineptly.
The biggest problem is that what Benedict XVI said angered not only Muslim extremists, but angered even moderate and secularist Muslims. He really needs to rebuild those bridges, for the sake of the safety of Catholics and other Christians who live in Muslim neighborhoods around the world.
Taking this letter seriously would be a good step forward.
