See for yourself. CNN Headline News reports on Harold Ford, Jr.’s campaign adviser’s claim (in response to a newspaper’s report that he never passed the bar examination) that he “never held himself out to be a lawyer”. Then, on CNN, Harold Ford states “I’m a lawyer.”

I think you're a lawyer if you practice law.

Slippery ethics on Ford's part. Makes him suitable to run as a Democrat. Fits right in with the party's principles.

If he holds a juris doctorate degree then he is a Doctor of the Law.

But not passing the bar? It is a tough test but it isn't *that* hard.

"Will Ford campaign call this racist too?"

Sexist and homophobic, too. Have to invoke the Liberal Trinity at every opportunity -- even when you have to make one.

Repeat after me:

Racist and sexist and homophobic, oh my!
Racist and sexist and homophobic, oh my!
Racist and sexist and homophobic, oh my!
Racist and sexist and homophobic, oh my!

"I think you're a lawyer if you practice law."

But you have to be admitted to the bar of the court before you can practice in that jurisdiction.

You're a lawyer if you graduate from law school.

That's not necessarily so. I don't know if it's by tradition or by law but those who have graduated law school but not yet passed the bar exam are not considered to be lawyers. As far as I know, the term 'lawyer' is reserved for those who have passed the bar exam.

Nope, you're a JD if you graduate from law school - not a lawyer until you're admitted to a bar.

LOL...I don't know about practicing law, but I know that in most, if not all States, making a public statement presenting yourself as an Engineer when in fact you are not licensed by the State in the regulated profession, is deemed "practicing without a license"...which is unlawful. You can't even have business cards with the title "Engineer". Some of you Lawyer-type Freepers should shed some light on this for us.

Don't know the facts of this issue or if he claimed to have "practiced" law but, in some states (maybe all, I don't know) it's a felony to practice law without a license. And passing the bar exam is usually a prerequisite to being licensed.

All the more reason for we broken glass Republicans to get out and vote Pubbies into office, to bury these lying, blood-drenched democrats asap ... to not do so when we have this amazing opportunity of liberal exposure is to commit slow suicide and spit in the face of our courageous military personnel fighting the war on terrorists.

I passed the NY bar but don't practice, and I have been known to self-identify as a lawyer. I think the key is passing a bar and getting a professional license.

You said: Wait a minute. You're a lawyer if you graduate from law school. You get admitted to the bar in your state and can practice law if you pass the bar exam. I think it's fair for him to say he's a lawyer if he graduated from law school; he should just not say that he is a practicing attorney.
***

I have to disagree. If you graduate law school you are a law school graduate. You can put JD after your name (if you are lame). A lawyer is someone who practices law, and to do that you must pass the bar exam and be admitted to practice.

If I took a plumbing course at a technical school and passed it, I couldn't call myself a plumber unless I had a license.

Now, being a JOURNALIST is different, since there is no license required. All you have to do is write stuff-- I don't think you even have to be published.

It can't be too hard, even I passed it, and on the first try.
