Advanced Cell Technology's Dr. Robert Lanza Testifies Before U.S. Senate Subcommittee; Testimony Discusses How Company's Technique for Human Stem Cell Development May Advance Support for Stem Cell Research

WORCESTER, Mass., Sep 06, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. (ACTC) today announced that Robert Lanza, M.D., Advanced Cell Technology's Vice President of Medical and Stem Cell Development, testified today before the Senate Labor, Health & Human Services and Education Appropriations Subcommittee. Dr. Lanza's testimony focused on support for wider availability of human embryonic stem cells for basic medical research. Dr. Lanza is the principle author of a paper published online (ahead of print) on August 23 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature, which described a technique for developing human embryonic stem cells with a single-cell biopsy technique called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). This technique is not harmful to embryos.

"Our hope is that the new method we described in Nature can be used to increase the number of cell lines that qualify for federal funding

I love reading your optimism.
Lets hope the conservative base isn't falling for the
"punish the RINOs, vote Democrat" line I hear from the likes of Neil Boortz & Michael Savage
I do not listen to either of thier egotistical hysterics.
Thank God for Internet radio.

This technique is not harmful to embryos.

Not one embryo survived the process:

From http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=23953

In a news release about the study published in its pages, Nature said only one cell had been extracted from each embryo, making a mistake it soon corrected.

The news media reported the study as a significant breakthrough that might end the controversy over the cells that supposedly have great potential for treating debilitating diseases but so far have required the destruction of a human embryo in order to extract them.

Some pro-life bioethicists quickly pointed out, however, the technique not only remained unethical but it actually was not used by the researchers. The ACT team, led by Lanza, actually took from four to seven cells from each of 16 embryos, destroying all of them in the process.

Wesley Smith, a senior fellow with the Discovery Institute, said ACT and the news media "simply took a leap of faith and portrayed an experiment showing that something might be possible as if the feat had already been accomplished. This is not to say, of course, that deriving embryonic stem cell lines from a procedure that allows the embryo to survive is impossible -- only that it hasn't been done."

When Lanza appeared at the Senate hearing, Specter and Harkin clearly were upset about the potential injury his firm may have inflicted upon the movement to fund embryonic stem cell research

"ACT should have made it more clear from the beginning that none of the embryos survived," Harkin said. The stem cell arena has "been hyped too much. We need to come back to Earth," he said, The Post reported.

Don't look behind the curtain

Michael's a character actor,
But we must not consider that factor.
We may only show pity
On the saint from Spin City.
If we question, we're called a detractor.

I cannot find anything to further substantiate claims the embryos lived or died ... and since the only source saying such comes off a Baptist news site.

What I can say is that claims of preserving life must be proved before the Fed backs such research. I have my doubts that a company with this much on the line, so many years in developement would risk not just public and professional ridicule but their careers concerning such a finding so easily discoverable.

Me thinks the anti-stem cell crowd is very powerful in this country with enough guns to fight this for some time...to hell with the facts.

It's cloning they're really fighting.

"pssssssst ... Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. has discovered a way to do the stem cell thing without harming embryos."

Pssssst ... an even bigger secret, apparently, is that Advanced Cell Technology put out a misleading press release to pump their stock price, when in actuality they destroyed the embryos.

This is a direct quote from Harkin. "ACT should have made it more clear from the beginning that none of the embryos survived," Harkin said.

I have my doubts that a company with this much on the line, so many years in development would risk not just public and professional ridicule but their careers concerning such a finding so easily discoverable.

Companies stretch the truth about their products all of the time, so I wouldn't be shocked. The Culture of Death crowd is very powerful.

Me thinks the anti-stem cell crowd is very powerful in this country with enough guns to fight this for some time...to hell with the facts.

Not many people I know are anti-stem cell. What they are is anti-embryonic stem cell. There is a great distinction between the two. You use the same language the DIMS and MSM use to confuse the issue.

What are the facts? It seems like Harkin is convinced that all of the embryos died.

Do you actually think a company would lie thru a press release to increase their stock price? I'm not buying it... -sarc

Are you sure about that?

It's not that I don't believe you, but the whole stem cell enterprise is riddled with fraud.

Did I mention the fraud? Somebody should have mentioned the fraud.

"Did they hire Korean scientists?"

It was another one of those "Snuppy Moments," but this time, the controversy was not widely reported.

They also claim to have made a UFO, a time machine and an ugly filter for Helen Thomas.

All sarcasm aside - the worlds response to this has been "prove it". So I supose we'll know soon enough.

On another note - this place has changed over the past year I've noticed. Unless the Limbaugh line is followed to the letter around here, any views outside such are tarred and feathered.

When did the koolaid get passed out and when did the Southern Baptist Convention take ownership of Free Republic?

Just a few questions....

It has to do with fact. Which Limbaugh has on his side here. The press release by ACT was misleading and was untrue. A simple fact you want to ignore.

When did the koolaid get passed out and when did the Southern Baptist Convention take ownership of Free Republic?

I don't understand. Since the life digest is a Baptist web site I guess it doesn't have your stamp of approval? Or is it just an inconvenient truth to you that many so-called "scientists" lie and stretch the truth?
