Airport taxi flap about alcohol has deeper significance (Africans vs. Arabs)
Red StarTrib ^ | October 25, 2006 | Katherine Kersten

The airport taxi controversy may go deeper than the quandary over whether to accommodate Somali Muslim cabdrivers who refuse to carry passengers carrying alcohol. Behind the scenes, a struggle for power and religious authority is apparently playing out.

(snip)

The society is mediating the conflict between the cab drivers and the MAC. That seems odd, since the society itself clearly has a stake in the controversy's outcome.

How did the MAC connect with the society? "The Minnesota Department of Human Rights recommended them to us to help us figure out how to handle this problem," Hogan said.

Omar Jamal, director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center, thinks he knows why the society is promoting a "no-alcohol-carry" agenda with no basis in Somali culture. "MAS is an Arab group; we Somalis are African, not Arabs," he said. "MAS wants to polarize the world, create two camps. I think they are trying to hijack the Somali community for their Middle East agenda. They look for issues they can capitalize on, like religion, to rally the community around. The majority of Somalis oppose this, but they are vulnerable because of their social and economic situation."

Mohamud adds that Americans need to learn about Islamic law because the Muslim population here is growing. That's why the proposed two-tier system for airport cabdrivers is important, he says. It could become a national model for accommodating Islam in areas ranging from housing to contractual arrangements to the workplace.

Gee, does that mean we should start getting use to the idea of honor killings?

Does that mean we need to kill those who won't convert? Do we stone to death adulterous women? Do we destroy Israel?

It's easy, put your alcohol in your bags, take the taxi, and when you reach your dstination, as he hands you your bags, say "Careful with that one, I've got 3 bottles of scotch in it." ;-)

Gee, I don't like to ride in cabs with drivers who haven't bathed in several years, who smell like horse-sh*t on a hot day, whose cab has incense burning and a fresh chicken's head on the dash. I don't like drivers who mutter in arabic, haven't shaved their nose hair since birth, smell like camel dung, and can't speak english.

"It could become a national model for accommodating Islam in areas ranging from housing to contractual arrangements to the workplace."

This would effectively put the Sharia above the Constitution and create a catagory of rights whereby one must accomodate any Muslim fatwa that some imam decides is appropriate according to his intrepretation of Islamic law..

I don't care that Sharia applies to divorce, custody and inheritance arrangements.

When it begins to impact on the public sphere, that's where the line needs to be drawn.

Hah!

In all seriousness, though, I plan to take the opposite approach. I plan to announce that I'm carrying liquor whether I am or not, before I get in the cab.

I really don't want to ride with someone who is that hung up (or pretends to be) on some ludicrous tenet. And I certainly don't want to put money in their pocket.

"It could become a national model for accommodating Islam in areas ranging from housing to contractual arrangements to the workplace."

That tidbit was buried near the end of the two-page article, sounds like the tip of the iceberg. Here's the last paragraph:

MAC officials will hold another meeting today about the airport controversy, and Mohamud says he will try to revive the two-tiered pilot project for taxis. Whatever the meeting's outcome, we now have reason to believe that the issue is only a prologue to a larger drama playing out in Minnesota and the United States.

Thanks for this article. It was extremely interesting. Some actual journalism from the MSM for a change.

I wonder how much of this goes on all over the West. Europe is probably full of these Muslim brotherhood types, pretending to be respectable muslim organisations. In Europe they are also probably state funded.

Thanks for the post.

Cheers.

Mohamud adds that Americans need to learn about Islamic law...

Nope. I learned all I needed to know about that islamic crap on Sept 11, 2001.

That's why the proposed two-tier system for airport cabdrivers is important...

Nope, not the least bit important to me or any other American patriot. We don't have "two-tiered" treatment. (Oh wait. I forgot about that "Affirmative Action" crap. Oh, well.)

You idiots forget that this is the land of opportunity? Equal opportunity?

It could become a national model for accommodating Islam...

Nope.

Once again, just in case you weren't listening - No accomodations for islam or any of the nut-cases involved in it or with it.

This is a nation founded on the tenets of the Christian religion, which, even with all it's warts and blemishs, provides for a much more "accomodating" attitude than your sharia crap ever will or can.

We are an "accomodating" people in the first place, since we recognize that one has the right to refuse service to those (well, usually we do) whom they do not wish to serve and that equally, one has the right to not seek nor use the service another provides.

One cannot be forced to the other.

(Ya hear that, Natalie? Barbra? Madonna? Just shut your stinking mouths and sing. You too, Michael J. Fox, George Clooney, just shut up with the politicizing and grandstanding and just act. Well, assuming you could in the first place, of course.)

Muslim communities belong in Muslim countries.

Which will still need to be bombed and/or invaded periodically.

There's always a bright side, no Muslims on aircraft that have liquor on board. Heck, just ban them from all flights that have alcohol so that there's no problem after the door's closed.

Works for me.
