Canadian city sets underwear rule for firefighters

A Canadian city under pressure for alleged sexual harassment within its fire department has ordered firefighters to wear only boxer-style underwear. Richmond, British Columbia will spend C$16,000 (7,600 pounds) to buy six pairs of underwear for each firefighter in a bid to make firehalls in the suburb of Vancouver more gender neutral, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

"We supply firefighters with various pieces of gear such as gloves, now it's underwear," city official Ted Townsend told the Vancouver Sun, saying it was part of the "integration of the sexes in the workplace."A recent investigation of the department described its workplace culture as "characterized by juvenile and hostile behaviour" towards female firefighters by their male colleagues.

Firefighters strip off most of their clothes in order to don protective gear when responding to fire alarms, although Townsend said the city is considering buying gear that can be put on over regular uniforms.

One way to solve the problem is to not hire women. I know a lot of firemen who are afraid to have the women on their shifts.  They can not open the fire hydrants and nozzles on the fire hoses and can not carry out the civilians they're supposed to rescue.  They're told by the other firemen that if it's time to rescue a fireman, do NOT attempt, just radio the emergency for the others to come to the rescue.

Looks as though underwear is the news topic of the day.

More PC nonsense. Women should be at home. That's about it.

Do they have regular 'underwear inspections' to enforce the policy?

This old world seems to grow a bit more stupid everyday. There's not much more one can say about nonsense like this. Our Maker had a Divine Plan for humanity---I don't think female firefighters is part of that plan!

They expect to reduce sexual harassment by prohibiting women from wearing bras? Weird.

No way a FR search would find it, but this is previously posted under a very different title. Enjoy.

Well, probably about 90% of the calls nowadays are EMT and vehicle accident-related anyway, and (the right) women can handle that just fine.

But there are d@mn few women who can perform a structural fire rescue alone. It's hard enough for a 'big man' in full turn out/mask/ tools to get it done. Ya gotta have significant upper body strength.

IT's not that women CAN'T do it, it's more that no one who can't should be allowed on hose or ladder.

Oh, you're welcome, but you have such good points. Females should also be encouraged to work from home if they really have to work.
