Philly Officials, Hispanic Leaders Object to Election Monitors

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — City officials and Hispanic community leaders objected Thursday to the federal government's plans to put monitors at city polling places on Election Day, saying those efforts could discourage people from voting.

The Department of Justice earlier this month asked a federal judge to authorize appointment of monitors beginning with the upcoming Nov. 7 election and ending in 2009. The government accused the city of failing to provide sufficient election materials in Spanish and not recruiting enough bilingual poll workers.

But City Solicitor Romulo L. Diaz Jr. said at a news conference Thursday that the federal government could not guarantee him that federal monitors wouldn't follow voters into polling booths. It would be better to appoint local monitors, he said.

A spokesman for the Justice Department said he would look into the solicitor's claims but could not immediately comment.

It's very intimidating when a corpse has to answer these questions just to vote.

Yeah, and wait 'til they have one on camera saying "at every one of the polling places I voted at, I got questioned! This is un-American!"

"It's very intimidating when a corpse has to answer these questions just to vote."

Or when someone who doesn't speak English and is not a citizen has to answer them.

Or when someone who already votes in another district or county has to answer them.

If nobody's doing anything illegal, then nobody has anything to worry about.

The democrats will be cheating like crazy this November.

This would only be a concern if someone planned to cheat!

If this is accurate, then the topic is highly suspicious. Americans should generally approve of monitors. It helps dissuade theories of ballot-stuffing, along with actually cases of it.

They've got the 'empty lot' demographic. Republicans need to work on pounding sand to gain this select group.

Of course they do ... they can't cheat if they're monitored.

So, the poor and elderly, besides getting the willies over the carrying of identification cards, also will be kept from voting by the presence of "officials" within the voting area?

Why do I get the feeling here that the Democrats are covering up much more than they let on?

Actually, when have the Democrats ever cared about the poor, the elderly and minorities except when it comes time to tally votes?

(Illegal Immigrants + Democrats + minorities) = Vote Fraud

No exceptions. No corrective action..
No voter I.D., No proof of citizenship...

Mustn't intimidate the illegal voting sonsuvbitches, the Democrats rely upon them.

Since the Republicans have been unsuccessful in correcting this KNOWN and DANGEROUS situation -- if they're beat by illegal voting and fraud - they deserve it, but the Republic doesn't.

Never...

Harper's Weekly cartoon, 1968 - same corruption with the same tactics...

"This cartoon accuses Democrats of engaging in vote fraud; in this case, grants of citizenship prior to the end of the legally required waiting period, and repeat voting. The new recruit is of course a working-class Irish-American, who could be working for money (offered by the figure second from the left?), alcohol (note the whiskey bottle), patronage, or other benefits. The portraits on the wall are of Frank Blair and Horatio Seymour (top, l-r), the Democratic national ticket, and John Hoffman (bottom), the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in New York."

If nobody commits fraud, then whats the problem with monitors???

Maybe if your 'dead' and voting, your afraid someone will recongize you? If your a 'prisoner' your afraid someone will recongize you? Well then, your got a problem don't you?

Maybe if folks around Philly call city hall? Or wrote letters to the editors expressing outrage and amazement that Philly would reject monitors?

Dunno... any ideas of what we can do?

The only silver lining is, if we win and you know the lefties will scream fraud, we can show it was Democrats that rejected election monitors...

Wouldn't be surprised. Jim Quinn (of The Quinn & Rose Show) mentioned an ongoing investigation about some union mobsters and Rendell supporters attacking White House protestors during Clinton's 8-year nightmare. I found out a week or so ago on another FR thread that those protestors were FReepers.

More of this BS should be exposed, because Rendell is a dangerous crook backed by a bunch of mob thugs.

But City Solicitor Romulo L. Diaz Jr. said at a news conference Thursday that the federal government could not guarantee him that federal monitors wouldn't follow voters into polling booths. It would be better to appoint local monitors, he said.

So, they're not objecting to monitors, just federal ones? They'd rather have local monitors, presumably people they can control?

Hopefully the Feds will not give in on this. With Federal Election Monitors in Philly, that alone should be at least a 2% vote increase for Rick Santorum and the three Pubbie Congressional incumbents the Dems hope to replace.
