Webb Defends Novels Against Attacks (cleaning off the fan in Virginia)
The Washington Post ^ | October 29, 2006 | Tim Craig and Michael D. Shear

Virginia U.S. Senate candidate James Webb yesterday delivered his strongest criticism of incumbent Sen. George Allen of the fall campaign, vigorously defending himself against Allen's charges that he wrote sex-laced passages in his fiction novels.

He called on voters to reject what he called the "smear tactics" of Allen and his campaign, who released excerpts Thursday from Webb's novels to the Drudge Report Web site and said the writings were lurid and inappropriate for a man seeking to serve in the Senate.

"The fish rots from the head down," Webb (D) said, referring to his belief that Allen (R) is responsible for his campaign staff's tactics and has now shown his true character. "Our government should no longer be in the hands of a group of unprincipled, small-minded, power-hungry character assassins."

More on the great Jim Webb!

I can see where Jim Webb put the priorities of women. His Navy claims about helping women have been debunked.

1.And I have never met a woman, including the dozens of female midshipmen I encountered during my recent semester as a professor at the Naval Academy, whom I would trust to provide those men with combat leadership." (pg. 148, "Women Can't Fight," Washingtonian Magazine, November 1979.
2. "Many women appear to be having problems with their sexuality…What kind of woman would seek out the Academy routine?" (pg. 282, "Women Can't Fight," Washingtonian Magazine, November 1979)
3. "What the whole world may not know is that women did not attain these positions in the same way that men historically have…Women will not be leading men inside the brigade this year. They will be managing them, buttressed by the officers who hurried them along. And the morale of the brigade will demonstrate this distinction far better than this article ever could." (pg. 277, "Women Can't Fight," Washingtonian Magazine, November 1979)
4. Webb referred to female midshipman at Annapolis as "thunder thighs." (Baltimore Sun, 8/28/92)
5. "Tailhook should have been a three or maybe five-day story." (Speech to the Naval Institute Annual Conference, Washington Times, 4/25/96)

That was 1979 and The Cosmos was 1986. Times have changed but Jim Webb stays the same. The pattern is there and it continues with his novels. To argue there is not a problem is absurd. I doubt you can make a stronger case showing a pattern of sexism then Webb has with his words and actions.

The Washington Post can accept some of the blame for the Allen attack. Allen has every right to do what he has done, particularly since he has been under a daily barrage from the Post, beginning with that silly flap over the Macaca remark. That suddenly became a fatal sin in the democrat loving eyes of the Post. Then the endorsement where they saw him totally differently than most Virginians. I accidentally typed in moist Virginians, but I guess those would be the titillated Webb supporters that includes the non Virginian Washington Post.

Sorry, you can't make Cosmos Club membership scandalous; it's a high honor here in Washington, and several members of the current administration and other Republican office holders have belonged, themselves. They have certainly accepted black members for at least thirty years, at least since John Walker became Bishop of Washington, and women have been admitted since 1988, as you pointed out.

That dog, as the saying goes, won't hunt.

It might, if any of the links worked; I don't know. But attacking the Cosmos Club is just silly.

I tend to write like the press when I get a story i don't care if it is true any more or not...I could care less about a Cosmos Club..if they at one time did that they are filled with the same type of people only those people lie about how they feel about blacks..Not all people but more than likely the majority in any private club...

So, your post verifies for me that you've really never heard of the Cosmos Club; you have no idea of its background or why people are members there (hint, it's not to hate black people). Your profile flag indicates that you are not able to vote in the Virginia race in any case, so why not leave that race to those of us who can? :) Surely you have a few races in your state, to keep you occupied.

He called on voters to reject what he called the "smear tactics" of Allen and his campaign

What smear tactics? This guy writes a bunch of filth and that calls it a low blow when Allen points it out.

Hey Webb, that filth came out of YOUR mind, not Allens.

I am quite unhappy with the Allen campaign using books to attack Webb. It politicizes writing. Newt Gingrich, Scooter Libby and Lynne Cheney have all put rather bizarre sex scenes in their books, and to take just the disturbing parts and isolate them from the rest of the book is disingenious.

Webb is the one who politicized it by running for office. He may well be a fine (though twisted) author, but that kind of man really shouldn't be running for office to represent the people of Virginia.
