Italy's first transsexual MP, a flamboyant 41-year-old television star, has caused a storm in the houses of parliament by using the female lavatories.
Vladimir Luxuria, 41, an MP for the Communist Refoundation party, was born a man but dresses in women's clothes and prefers to be addressed as a woman. She says she considers herself "neither male nor female".
She was found in the ladies' lavatory by Elisabetta Gardini, a former showgirl who is now a spokesman for Forza Italia, the party led by Silvio Berlusconi.
Miss Gardini allegedly told Ms Luxuria: "This is the ladies', you cannot come in here, get out." She later complained: "It was a thousand miles from my mind that I should walk in and find him there.
"When I went into the toilet I honestly felt very uncomfortable. I felt I had been attacked sexually."
Ms Luxuria said: "At first I thought it was a joke. Then I meekly complied. Afterwards, I got angry. I have been using ladies' bathrooms for years, and I've been using this one at the houses of parliament for six months. Lots of my colleagues have seen me in the bathroom and I often join in the gossip."
Ms Luxuria is described on the parliament's website as a man, but is familiar to every Italian as a woman thanks to her television chat show.
She said: "It would be absurd for me to go pee with the men. There would probably be bigger problems."
The spat has divided politicians and caused a heated debate among parliamentary whips. Mara Carfagna, another Forza Italia MP, said: "If he undergoes the necessary operations and becomes a real woman then no one would have anything to worry about and we would accept him in the woman's bathroom openly."
However, some colleagues have rallied behind Ms Luxuria and the leader of the lower house has called for calm and tolerance.
The most likely solution is that Ms Luxuria will be granted her own private bathroom.
We can't, but we are.
Hogwash.
Diana, do you know the current legal requirements?
And around here, we like to call it "Madistan," MadIvan.
;o)
If they are going to elect such freaks, they can at least refer to them by the proper name.
I wonder if Italy is gone past the point of no return to Western Civilization
"...another Forza Italia MP, said: "If he undergoes the necessary operations and becomes a real woman."
No man has ever been successfully changed by an operation into a woman. That's a fact. It's bad enough some people choose to live a life of delusional fantasy.
It's worse when others who should know better support the absurdity.
I disagree; he's merely a transvestite. The reaction to him should be the same as the Mounties to the crossdressing lumberjack in the "Lumberjack Song".

If you see Tracey Ullman, coming at you, RUN! She'll be looking for revenge!
Very interesting replies, excellent considerations and amusing humor!
Definitely Italian newspapers should report all your writings! Grazie to all!
Super response./s
"Diana, do you know the current legal requirements?"
No, it's not something I've ever looked into. I avoid public toilets when I'm in Madistan, LOL!
Actually I think both of the big Malls (East & West Towne) have "Family Bathrooms" where you can bring either sex child in with you in case Dad has the girl kid in tow that day and vice-versa.
At first, I also thought that no one but a disabled person could use those larger bathroom stalls; I thought cops would rush in and arrest you for doing so, LOL!
I don't get off the farm much, as you can probably tell.
