Conclusions of University of Nevada Casino Workers Secondhand Smoke Study Unwarranted

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A July 2005 study, which appeared in Toxicology Letters, claimed to find a link between secondhand smoke exposure and genetic damage in casino workers.

But according to David W. Kuneman, the Director of Research of the Smoker's Club, Inc, "It's just not so."

The authors had stated a more exhaustive study would be published later this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association, but as of yet, this has not happened.

The authors of the study actually reported no association between secondhand smoke exposure and any genetic damage in nonsmoking female casino workers, but had found that one kind of genetic damage was associated with secondhand smoke exposure in nonsmoking males.

Kuneman added, "That study tested nonsmoking casino workers plasma for the tobacco-smoke-specific tracer, cotinine, but found these workers' exposure scores ranged from 0.01 up to 4.9, an almost 500-fold difference. It's impossible for casino smoke concentrations in the air to vary as much as 500 fold from lowest to highest." He went on to say, "With that in mind, it's obvious the University of Nevada researchers had a problem with measuring cotinine, or some of the nonsmoking casino workers were light or occasional smokers themselves."

The study did not even consider the length of employment of the casino workers, or if any were former smokers.

"Without a reliable method to test for secondhand smoke exposure, and for years of exposure among these workers, it's impossible to draw any conclusions from the study." he added. Kuneman's full analysis of the casino workers' study is available at http://kuneman.smokersclub.com/casinoworkers.html

Watch the movie Thank You for not Smoking to see how data can be manipulated to serve both sides. And let people draw their own conclusions.

The SHS issue may never be solved. I just hope smoking continues to wither until it is fades away on its own.

I also accept the private property rights issues, and know that it cuts both ways. I recently asked a person to leave my home because they stank of cigarette smoke. Daughter (it was her friend) was a little peeved...but she got over it.

Most of the "workers" in Nevada Casinos were heavily "damaged" by their upbringing and home "environment" long before they were old enough to work in a casino.

Most of them smoke, so this is a big Trojan Horse, which is bringing in more "MOMMY" laws and is going to hurt the casino industry.

In Nevada, the gaming business supports alot of the state, and we have no income tax here. If the transplanted Califonians don't like the smoking laws here, they can return to Kalifornia or keep going to Colorado- Denver in particular.
Lots of us here like the quiet, no street lights proliferation, ability to shoot in the hills, Sheriff's deputies we wave to when they drive by, etc, etc.
