In looking at potential pick-ups for the Democrats this year in Red-districts, I have detected a noticeable issue that is being used against Republican incumbents - anger over immigration/trade/labor issues. This is an area of concern Country Club republicans have ignored for years, and may, be coming back to haunt them.
One could probably argue the whole issue over Immigration, NAFTA/CAFTA, and loss of factory jobs are all tied together and certainly important to a large number of conservative voters in Red Districts Districts to a large extent that have not benefited economically from our move to a more global economy.
Lets look a few districts and where these candidates stand:
Kentucky District 3: Anne Northup (R) vs John Yarmuth (D). Latest Poll Oct 24-26 has Yarmuth leading 52 46%. Anne Northup vote YES on CAFTA. The Democrat Yarmuth has this to say illegal immigration on his web site: We must strictly enforce laws against the employment of illegal immigrants by prosecuting companies that knowingly hire non-citizens without work visas.
Kentucky District 4: Geoff Davis (R) vs John Lucas (D). Latest Poll Oct 24-26 has Lucas leading 50 46%. Geoff Davis voted YES on CAFTA Hes also in trouble for supporting companies that sponsor Pay-day loans. Seems hes flip-flopped on the issue a bit. Ken Lucas is a former member of congress and as his website notes, a proud member of the Pro-Life Caucus and received the endorsement of such groups as the National Rifle Association and the recommendation of the National Right to Life Committee. Lucas says, he would have voted against the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) to hold out for more stringent work standards.
Indiana District 2: Chris Chocola (R) vs Joe Donnelly (D). Latest Poll Oct 24-26 has the Democrat Joe Donnelly leading 48% - 43%. Chocola support CAFTA. Donnelly is a staunch Pro-lifer and appears to support strict enforcement of immigration laws.
Indiana District 8: John Hostetller (R) vs Brad Ellsworth (D). Latest Poll Oct 24-26 has the Democrat Ellsworth leading 53 43%. Lets cut to the chase on this one. From Ellsworth own website: We face a national crisis when it comes to illegal immigration When we capture illegals here in Vanderburgh County, my deputies call INS and INS tells them theres no place to put them. Thats not right. Its also not right when an Indiana employer passes over an American for a job only because an illegal worker is cheaper. We need to tighten our borders, enforce the laws we have, and punish employers who break them. This is about economic security as much as it is national security.
Indiana District 9: Mike Sodrel (R) vs Baron Hill (D). Sodel won by less than 2000 votes in 2004. Latest Poll Oct 24-25 has the Hill leading 51 43%. Mike Sodrel (IN-9) was a co-sponsor of the CAFTA bill HR 3283, after he campaigned against Baron Hill for supporting trade bills unfavorable to American workers. Hill is campaigning for an energy independent America
North Carolina District 11: Charles Taylor (R) vs Heath Schuler (D). Latest Poll Oct 24-26 has Schuler leading 53 44%. Only two members of the House didn't register a vote on the CAFTA Charles Taylor was one of them. Heath Schuler is an outspoken Evangelical Christian and has criticized Taylor for not voting against CAFTA.
North Carolina District 8: Robin Hayes (R) vs Larry Kissell (D). Latest Poll Oct 24-26 has Kissel Leading 48 44%. Around midnight on July 27, 2005, Hayes changed his CAFTA vote from "no" to a crucial, last-minute "yes" after House Speaker Dennis Hastert lobbied him in the House Cloak Room. Now hes propobly going to pay for it in this election. Kissel is a former textile worker that lost his job to free trade agreements. Hes also probably the least family friendly candidate when it comes to social values, but he is definitely anti NAFTA/CAFTA.
More candidate research as I find the time.

That is, simply put, insane.
Hey, all politics is local. It might be too little to late for the GOP. I hope they hold the house, but there's ALOT of 'Conservatives' in that list I'd support.
All those with a case of "buchanitis" or "tancreitus" should join the the democratic party?
As a conservative, I typically vote for the candidate that will do the least harm. Usually it's a Republican, but sometimes ...
Your post sums up Pat Buchanan's whole political career... INSANE.
Oh please raise my taxes Mr. Democrat!!!!
They need to post Kissel's name next to as many rainbow flags with the phrase "Support Gay Marriage"....
When was this written?
These aren't the most recent polls. They've got KY-3 and KY-4 wrong, and IN-9 as well.
Yeah, he seems very guarded about his positions on Family Values - I couldn't vote for him ...
This clown had half the votes as Ralph Nader in 2000. I'm really skeered ...
Those are the most rescent on the Majoritywatch web site. Post the latest if you have 'em ...
See how gays in the military plays at Fort Bragg...
They just want to structure it so that it benefits the union, the environmentalists, and the social justice crowd, while the GOP wants to benefit the investors.
And to be be more accurate, moderate dems also want to benefit the investors.
Do you remember Pat B. marching thru the streets of Seattle, after the riots, holding hands with the Marxists?
Pat is going to unite the left and the right against the center. Get on board, brother.

He said they were Pat's troops. It is to be expected.
Anybody familiar with NC politics could have told you that Robin Hayes was going down the minute he succumbed to the arm-twisting and went turncoat. His district was and is thoroughly opposed to CAFTA due to the tremendous loss of jobs that they had experienced, and continue to experience. Hayes is heir to a textile fortune himself. He's going to lose to a neophyte ... a school teacher and former textile worker. Payback's a bitch, and that's exactly what this is. Hayes knew it was coming. The party knew it was coming. So mock all you want, but it's a big, fat told-you-so situation down there. That seat was given away for a treaty. I hope it was worth it.
