Hugh Hewitt: Pennsylvania Meltdown

From a connected Keystoner:

We all prepared for this year’s elections to be heated, particularly in PA with so many contested races. But even with teams of lawyers on the ground, I don’t think anyone anticipated what is going on right now. I expect this will be THE national story by 5pm today if not sooner.

37 counties in Pennsylvania use the ESS & Ivotronic.

These machines are experiencing massive failures.

If you vote for one candidate, the opposing candidate lights up.

Rendell votes are counting for Swann. Santorum votes are counting for Casey and so on

County Boards of Elections or the PA Dept of State are refusing to take action.

They don’t see the disaster that is coming.

Hundreds if not thousands of voters are alerting the authorities of these problems.

This may warrant a revote in these 37 counties.

That last bit sounds like ubran legendy in the making.

We used Ivotronic machines here in central NC. The process seemed smooth, but I have no idea whether the vote I cast was recorded correctly.

Give me the mechanical pull-the-lever-machines. I distrust the electronic ones more because of the possibility of programming tampering.

I haven't heard that either

I'm thinking we need to get more concrete confirmation of any problems possibly occurring

It didn't sound like it shredded to me when I cast my vote, but someone else came into the office this afternoon and said thats what the machine did. That is why I am asking. It would make NO sense to shred ballots.

Then they switch to an external polling system to contact the citizenry to record votes. The obsession with polling has been a form of substitute voting for years. Of course, it is less about determining the true will of the majority and more to do with influencing public opinion.

I voted electronically and I was asked before I pushed the final answer if my choices were correct. I also could have gotten a paper printout.

It's already been totally discredited. That's why I quit voting. They had to keep recounting in Washington state THREE TIMES before they managed to give Fraudoire the lead over Rossi, and as soon as they "say" she had it, they declared it over.

Electronic voting machines are the biggest fraud ever. They will let you think you have a choice, just to keep you from getting ready to start a revolution.

But you don't. And as the situation in Washington state proved, you have NO RECOURSE in the courts.

So it's not the people anymore. It's small time workers at the precinct level. Remember, all they need for their desired candidate to win is to be ahead in their precinct by ONE vote.

And there's basically no way to fight it.

"This is a real problem facing our Nation right now!"

I have to agree. First discredit the system. That started with Al Gore and Florida, then Kerry and Ohio. Now the dems attack the very machines they demanded. No election will go unchallenged.

I don't mind the electronic machines, but the MUST print out a paper ballot, which most do not.

You can check that ballot, and then drop it in the ballot box. The paper ballots are counted and checked against the computer count. They better match. Redundant and a paper trail.

Then the lawyers get to choose our leaders. Do you really think the computer you use to post here works and the ones they use in PA don't? This is just the plan to steal an election in the courts kiddo. It won't work though.

The electronic machines worked FLAWLESSLY all day at my polling place here in PG county, Marlyand.

Odd that the "issues" would be so concentrated...

What in the world is with these voting machines??? This doesn't happen to ANY other machine - washing machines, soda machines, credit card machines, ATMs, computers, x-ray machines, telephones, emissions testing machine, etc. - you all get the idea. Just voting machines mess up with regularity - W H Y?????

No problems here in my corner of PA. Not a corner actually but dead in the middle.
We now have the electronic touch screens, which I was dismayed to see. A poll worker stood behind me to the side, close enough to read how I voted, but it's a small town and I didn't feel like antagonizing the old fellow.
By the way, while I was there, 2 vets of WW2 were there, one helping the other who was on a walker. They were talking like it was 1945 and they'd just wiped up the Axis. They were talking about Iraq and how, now that Saddam is out, the Iraqis should handle their own affairs and we should get out of there. It's back to American isolationism, I think. And it's an understandable sentiment; heck, George Washington felt the same way. But these men---and they're Republicans, since I heard them using bad words about Dems---are not into idealism, and they're not patient. They're peeved. What's most startling to me is that of all the things I heard at the polls today, there wasn't a word about taxes or jobs. People talked about pro-life, Iraq, and the personal character of some local candidates.
Well. If we lose, maybe it will result in a win in 2008.

I don't know if they are being shredded or not. My first take is that they aren't, but this is what someone told me.

FYI: maryland (PG county) voting machines, was 13 "pages" of electronic voting.

After the 13'th page it prepared a "summery" that displayed all of your votes on one page. If you wanted to change any one you just touched the question, it took you right to that question and you could do whatever to it and click 'summery' again and double check.

I don't see how it can work SO WELL where I'm at, and supposidly so bad there...

You know what, I just remember that someone said while I was there that at the end of the day, the ballots go into a 'big black special bag'. So I would say that they definitely are NOT shredded. I better call my friend to let her know that she is mistaken.

Yeah, I think that they said that it was the three northern most counties, and the the Republicans had lawyers working on it, but the officials were refusing to do anything about it.
