Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
The Wall Street Journal ^ | November 9, 2006 | James Taranto

Posted on 11/08/2006 2:11:04 PM PST by Zakeet

This column is scrupulously nonpartisan, but we will bend the rules for a moment and acknowledge that last night's outcome was not what we were hoping for. As of now, the Democrats have picked up 28 House seats, giving them at least 228 (a majority is 218). Eleven more seats are undecided, so the Dem gain could be as high as 39. The Democrats also will take a 51-49 majority in the Senate, having won every close race except in Tennessee--though it may be awhile before that's official, depending on whether Virginia's George Allen decides to take his razor-thin loss gracefully like Richard Nixon or brutishly like Al Gore.

Well, we like to think of the glass as being half full, and there's no use crying over spilled milk. (Yes, we know National Cliché Day was last Friday, but hey, better late than never.) So here are some reasons to be happy with the outcome.

Republicans deserved to lose. They arrived a dozen years ago promising reform and smaller government. They did deliver a very successful welfare reform law--but that was over a decade ago. What legislative accomplishments they have delivered since have mostly consisted in approving President Bush's initiatives, which is something, but far from the "revolution" they promised in 1994.

An excellent analysis (in my opinion) of yesterday's election by the editorial staff of the WS Journal. This article is deserving of careful reading and thoughtful reflection by GOP leadership.

I'm looking at the bright side. I have solidified three substantial commercial real estate transactions. The bad news is that my son in law re-upped for 5 years and is headed back to the Gulf in a few months. The president had better not kowtow to the appeasers. He needs to project strength.

Always Look On The Bright Side of Life
from
Monty Python's Life of Brian

Cheer up, Brian. You know what they say.
Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad.
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle,
Don't grumble, give a whistle!
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...

the music fades into the song

...always look on the bright side of life!
whistle

Always look on the bright side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten!
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing,

When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps,
Just purse your lips and whistle -- that's the thing!
And... always look on the bright side of life...

whistle
Come on!

other start to join in
Always look on the bright side of life...
whistle

For life is quite absurd,
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin -- give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it -- it's the last chance anyhow!

So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
Life's a piece of sh*t,
When you look at it.

Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

And always look on the bright side of life...
whistle
Always look on the bright side of life
whistle

I blame mostly the republican scandals, i.e. Foley, Delay, Cunningham, Ney, etc. for yesterday's loss. Republicans are not as forgiving as dems are, and when they see corruption, everyone gets punished. Case in point, New Jersey vs Ohio.

Look at this sly bit of advice:

"depending on whether Virginia's George Allen decides to take his razor-thin loss gracefully like Richard Nixon or brutishly like Al Gore."

In other words, George Allen shouldn't follow VA's legal procedure for contesting elections within 1 percentage point. Just go away quietly George, and lick your wounds in private....like John Ashcroft did in Missouri when the dead rose to vote for Callahan's widow.

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.

We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure, And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

And that's my whole point, New Jersey voted in another dem for governor and ignored the menendez allegations and prior to that there was the corrupt senator who was told not to run for office again. Republicans in OHio, on the other hand, voted for the dems who were running to replace the crooked republicans.

"""``When you're operating within a margin of three-tenths of one percent, there's reason for hope,'' former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie, an Allen campaign adviser, told reporters at a news conference in Richmond, Virginia. ``Only at the end of this process is a winner declared.''

The result of the re-tabulation won't be official until Nov. 27. Lee Goodman, counsel to the Republican Party, said the effort may uncover more votes for Allen.

Goodman told reporters there may be as many as 6,000 provisional ballots to be counted, and he said ballots remain to be counted in James City County, Fairfax City and Isle of Wight County.

Recount Possible

Under Virginia law, the loser will have 10 days after Nov. 27 to ask for a recount. If the margin remains less than half a percentage point, Virginia cities and counties will pay for it. Discretion for ordering any recount rests with state courts.

Gillespie declined to say whether Allen might ask for a recount if he still comes up short. ``On Nov. 27, you may be asking Mr. Webb'' that question, he said.

Democrats in Virginia said Allen's chances are slim of making up the 8,000-vote deficit with Webb...."

Well, I for one am waiting for the Investigations to start. That will be the real meat and potatoes of the Democrat victory. My hope is that we can identify what actually did go wrong in Iraq. Why the initial success and the follow on failures. I think the investigations would show that the American political system was to blame for the upsurge in violence in Iraq. I think that a real investigation will conclude that the Democrats in their quest to gain political power in the U.S. voicing their opposition to the war and false accusations about the President emboldened terrorists and fueled sectarian violence. I think it will show that comments directly related to Kerry and Murtha about our troops were directly responsible for the deaths of U.S. servicemen... Lets start the investigations...

Sorry, but since you DID, after all, mention “PC” in your post, you are simply the latest recipient of a newly discovered definition of the term, to wit:

Political Correctness:

”A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

By spreading this definition around, perhaps we can employ one of the more effective methods of deflating and defeating the fools who practice and promote it: RIDICULE.

Unless stopped – and soon – PC will DESTROY Western Civilization -- if it hasn’t already.

PASS IT ON!!

No, I think Talent caused his own demise in rural Missouri.

He was a two year, do-nothing Senator who was usually trying to appease the Democrats.

He also shot himself in the foot coming out for stem-cell research way before the issue was on the ballot in Missouri and then tried to qualify his position.

Talent was never popular in the State and IMHO road into the Senate on the coat tails of President Bush in '04.

You can't get out the vote when you don't have someone you believe in.

A question: With 2 Senators independents, how do the totals come out 51-49?

Lieberman's not an independent; circumstances merely required him to run as one in this specific election. For the year 2005, he had the second-most liberal voting record in the entire Senate (in 2004 he was #1); the only reason most of us on the right don't despise him is because he's an honest man, one of a tiny few who put the needs of the nation over the needs of his party with regards to the Iraq war. As for Bernie Sanders, he too is simply being honest in that he openly admits to being a full-blown socialist, while so many others try to couch their socialism in behind the "All-American" Democratic Party label.

But if you want to get technical: On the first day of a new Congress, everyone "caucuses" in a way not entirely unlike how you divided up into teams in elementary school gym class: All the Republicans gather on one side of the room, all the Dems on the other, and you sign up for your "team"; whichever side you choose is what you are. It doesn't matter what party label you ran under (in New York state, most candidates end up running on two, three or four different party lines at the same time), nor does it matter what you've got printed on your voter registration card. If you caucus as a Dem, you're a Dem, and vice versa for the GOP. And you can change sides at any time.

Although the details haven't been made public yet, everyone says that Lieberman's already going to be allowed to retain his Democratic seniority in the Senate, and will be handed a plum committee chairmanship. So my guess is he'll probably just drop the whole "Independent" thing the first chance he gets. As for Sanders, he'll probably stay an "(I)" just because he's always been stubborn that way, but you can be sure the Dems will take care of him, and that he will rarely vote against them.

Ok I guess that might be true.. should have used VA as a Senate race that wasn't tainted by corruption.. either way doesn't matter the stink of corruption was prevalent in the House... Only the Republicans resigned... Looking forward to prosecution of William Jefferson of LA.... and Harry Reid for his land deal and getting rid of all that corruption that Ms. Pelosi spoke of today... Instead of just Republicans hanging out there its time for the ahem squeaky clean (sarc off) Dems to get hung out to dry.

When asked which Party will work toward reducing the deficit 47% chose the Democrats while only 22% chose the Republicans.

Why don't some people take the time to learn the facts: In fiscal 2006, the federal budget deficit was $247.7 billion, which is 1.9 percent of GDP. In the glorious 90's of Bill Clinton, the federal budget deficit averaged 2.2 percent of GDP. But gosh, I don't remember anybody mentioning the deficit back then. But havent't we heard it repeatedly with GWB in the WH. (Not slamming Taranto here, just some of the people who were polled).

I think people in Missouri got extremely tired of the type of ads he was running against McCaskill. Some of them were extremely viscious while her ads stressed he had not voted for the minimum wage while take pay increases for himself.

Talent was MIA for the past two years in Missouri and his positive ads stressed how he liked to work with Democrats to get things done. Not exactly something to endear him to his conservative base.

McCaskill also ran ads saying she would crackdown on illegal immigration, support a fence on the border, would vote against amnesty and support stiff penalties for businesses hiring illegals. Something that may have endeared her to several conservatives. Since Missouri will eventually have one of the highest minimum wages in the country (thanks to the voters) I imagine the state will be flooded with more illegal immigrants so I hope she is serious.
