Only need 40 to Fillibuster.

You're assuming the republicans have the balls to filibuster. They don't. Only dems can filibuster without any consequences. Republicans would be pilloried the media as "obstructionists", and this bunch doesn't have the balls to stand up to the media.

Sorry for the pessimism.

Well since he's a conservative it's safe to say that liberals don't read his columns. I'm hoping they think this slight shift in power is a mandate and start acting like the loons they are. XD

'08 is right around the corner and Dems, especially the new ones that ran as conservatives this time around, exposing themselves in public can only help. ^^

Out of those 24 seats we lost, 10 of them ran as good old boy "Conservative" Democrats.

"Running as" and "voting as" are two entirely different things. Watch how fast those 'old boy blue dog conservative democrats' get sworn in, find out how the ancient system works from Harry Reid and run screaming towards the far left.

Yeah playing nice with people who think you are the embodiment of all political evil is really going to do a lot of good. Politics is a blood sport, not a Church Meeting

No, I disagree. It is the hatred, the arrogance, the rigidity, the bitter partisanship and polarization that turned off the electorate. The American people are basically good and decent, optimistic people. They don't want their leaders to be bitter, angry partisans. And they want an end to the bloodshed in Iraq. We have serious problems that need to be addressed. The voters want the two parties to work together. President Bush understands that.

It is in the best interest of the GOP to be courteous and polite, respectful of those they disagree with and willing to listen as well.

It is painful to lose like this. But the GOP has no one to blame but themselves. Now they need to listen to the people and be willing to work with the opposition. If the dems won't work with the GOP - that's going to hurt the dems - not the GOP. All eyes will be on the dems. If the GOP are honest people with common decency - they will be able to win back folks from the center.

We will have now a progressively harder and bloodier task in Iraq. The Persians and the Arabs and the Paks, all sorts of jihadis, sense victory now and the flow of fighters into Iraq will surge. We will appear to have been chased out by Allah's soldiers. No, we will have been chased out by Pelosi's soldiers but the effect will be precisely the same. We will not have our foothold in the ME when the big fight comes with Iran and we cannot avoid that fight by declining it; we can only relinquish advantage to the enemy.

"Don't forget we still got 49 Senators."

Yes, but how many of them have have demonstrated the spine to stand up for principles in the past? Who do you think will provide the "leadership" to maintain party unity in the face of the favorable coverage the Democrats are sure to receive from the mainstream media?

He seemed to have a real hard time spitting out the words "congresswoman Pelosi".

It isn't that easy to say and our CinC isn't exactly blessed with a silver tongue, but I think it was more than that.

I agree with you, but really need to ask:

Why was this even necessary? If the President wants these things, why didn't he get them with a Republican Congress?

Somehow I think the answer to this question is one of the answers to the questions about why the Congress is now held by the Rats.

I think the answer to what happens next lies with the amount of mail, e-mail, and phone calls made by conservative constituents.

We need to let them know that a spine is a terrible thing to waste, and also remind the President that a VETO is also a terrible thing to waste.

We must force our elected republican congressmen and senators to stand up and be counted.

I think you are correct. My feeling is that even Limbaugh misunderestimated him yesterday...

We'll see.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this viewpoint. The bitter divisiveness that's consumed politics is absolutely what pushed voters, and our best hope as a nation is to learn how to work with the other side without simply calling them traitors.

I think Bush and Pelosi have both recognized that: that's the feeling behind Bush's speech on working together, and that's why the Democrats have said they aren't focusing on impeaching Bush.

If they both stick to those promises, we'll have some real potential in the future.

What power do the Repubs have? Not talk radio.. Most Repubs have proven that they are more afraid of media than the voters. Dems have MSM where majority of people get thier news. Will the Repubs go back to thier roots and be conservative? If they try to block, MSM will be all over them. Dems are very good at manipulating the media and know that the media is part of the their organization and will help them.

"He seemed to take this in stride, presidentially, and with class."

This is probably the biggest reason I'm so forgiving of Bush and quick to defend him when people trash him. He's been genuinely olive branching the crap out of the Democrats the whole time he's been in office. He's going to be doing more of that now, and they'll still say he's being stubborn or something stupid like that. I just can't grasp the really visceral hate some people seem to have for him.
