Navajo President Hopeful About Dems

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) -- The newly re-elected president of the Navajo Nation said he hopes that the Democrats' takeover of Congress will help the nation's largest American Indian reservation, saying it was hard to win federal money from Republicans.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, the day after the Navajo general election, Joe Shirley Jr.'s thoughts were partly on how the political shift in Washington will translate into federal action on his reservation, which is home to about 300,000 people in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

"We're going to have a lot more friends in Washington," said Shirley, a Democrat. "I'm very much looking forward to continuing on with my quest as president and for more funding for our hospitals, for our schools, for our social services, for our health services, for the different things we get help with (from) the federal government."

Shirley compared working with a Republican-controlled House to "trying to get blood out of a turnip."

By treaty, the Navajos are a sovereign nation with their own government and laws. Like other American Indian tribes, they receive money from the federal government for social services, schools and infrastructure.

By treaty, they run themselves, but by reality, they receive govt money. What happened, casino license didn't get renewed, or smoke shop burned down?

We are a sovereign nation - we want to run the place our way and pay no taxes - but we do EXPECT US taxpayers to pay big bucks to us though...

We do not have a casino or a smoke shop. Government money is a part of the budget.Income comes from small business tax, a coal mine and power plant funds.

There is a glimmer of hope. Chief Ellis of the Creek Nation reiterated recently that it was his mission as chief to turn gambling into the second source of funds under traditional business revenue. Who knows. All the power to them. I wish they would get away from the tobacco out of health concerns.

Sure, but they want our money, too. Greedy just like so many other groups.

Now since Nancy has said that the dems must cut spending, wonder where this money will come from? Military maybe? Two birds with one stone, support their give-aways and trash the Military they despise for making the US so great in the world.

I assume since you're here, you're a conservative. Doesn't it sound to you that the arrangement you mention is a bit odd?

Shirley is an idiot. I was hoping Lynda Lovejoy would pull this one out. Unfortunately, she is anti-casino and the Navajos are about to get into the casino business. Nepotism rules on the reservation and it's hard to get rid of the "good old boys."

"Well, yes, it was hard for them to get money after Abramoff was arrested....."

Abramoff played the indians like a diseased blanket. Indian nations in general need to get better business talent to ward off carpet baggers like him.

Oh by the way, if you are 'truly' an Okie, you have some indian blood in you. Otherwise you are an european occupier.
