WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This is probably not what President Bush had in mind when he stressed bipartisanship after the Democratic Party's midterm elections sweep.
A key Senate Republican has joined Democrats in opposing one of Bush's initiatives for the lame-duck Congress: John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
With leaders from both parties promising a new bipartisan Washington, Bush began efforts to get two of his most controversial decisions approved before the Democrats take over.

But Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.
Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.
"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.
"And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."
The committee, dominated 10-8 by Republicans, requires a majority vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor. A tie would be the same as a no vote.

Bolton's appointment will expire in January unless the Senate confirms him, and the probable next chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee says approval is unlikely.
"I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because, regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate," said Democratic Sen. Joe Biden, who is set to become the committee's chairman and control the agenda in January.

Here's some wishful thinking - Bush knew that Bolton would not be confirmed - he waits and then appoints Rick Santorum! How cool would that be!
From what I have seen, with 20% pathetic turnout, there is no mandate to do anything conservative. Bush doesn't owe the conservatives squat. They stayed home Tuesday. Now we all pay the price.
Here, let me help:
The election turned out 40.4% of all voters. If we assume that 50% of the population is Republican and the other 50% is Democrat, then, out of the total, 40.4% of Republicans and 40.4% of Democrats voted, with each of them being 50% of the total of all people eligible to vote.
40.4% * 50% * 2 = .404 * .5 * 2 = 40.4%
I don't know where you "learned" math, but a 40% turnout -- evenly split between RATS and Republicans -- means that 40% of each stripe voted. 40% is 40%, dimwit.
That would be great. Oh, the wailing that would come from the RATs!
You forgot to mention McCain and Cornyn. They have to go as well.
Now that the republicans do not control either house it is time to stop voting for those that are republican in name only. The rational that they help us hold the leadership is no longer true. I hope everyone starts voting out the fake republicans.
Chaffee, the "Rhode Island moderate" (don't you just love it) also said he was going to switch parties and become a Rat. He said he only remained a Republican to bring home goodies for his state.
Oh, and this is the same money they use (yours) to defeat your candidate in the primaries after they tell you to knock out the RINOs in the primaries and then vote Republican in the fall even though your candidate is long gone. According to them, he couldn't possibly get elected any way. He's way too conservative and he is underfunded because he's not going to get the time of day from them.
I hope Santorum is hunting for a job somewhere other than with the Republican party because I would not count on them providing anything. He's served his purpose and will now be discarded like a dirty kleenex now that he's finished. JMO.

I couldn't figure out why Dole spent one cent of NRSC money on Chaffee either. He is no moderate, he is a flaming liberal who hates Republicans.
Soros is Booby Casey's largest contributor (over $ 150 thou, don't remember the exact figure.) Booby Casey is now the property of Soros et al. Do not expect him to be anything but a rubber stamp to Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry in his voting record and the brain dead in PA will never know the difference because it will NEVER appear in any local rag or on local TV. I would guess if you check on any of the other "conservative" Democrats who were elected, you will find they are also owned by Soros and will vote accordingly. Maybe the voters in some other states are smarter than the ones in PA (God, I hope so) and some of them will be one termers instead of the Senator-for-Life like Booby.

That's why they go into politics. There is no power in having daddy give you everything. In Washington, they become masters of the universe.
We would have easily won and had to put up with another 2 years of nothing, no action in Congress for any conservative ideas.
