"You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done."

-Ronald Reagan
October 27, 1964

This is so good to bring up Reagan's wit and fantastic grasp of the political world. The first I met him was in 1963 in Vallejo, Calif. when he came to the county fairgrounds pavillion and delivered a speech for Barry Goldwater, who was running against Lyndon B. Johnson.
He was ever so much the true gentleman....honest, sincere, optimistic and of course had a fantastic sense of humor.
By the way, the speech he gave that night in 1963 is the same speech he used a few more times that propelled him into the governorship of Calif. for two terms and then put him on the national scene. We are all gratefull for his service and deep in our hearts hope there is another like him to lead our Conservatives. When we get away from our conservative values, we lose elections, pure and simple. President Reagan proved that.

Funny you should post this--I was just looking up Winston Churchill quotes not a minute before. One that applies to conservatives' current situation:

"Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning."

Ronald Reagan is my hero!

My favorite Reagan story was this: He was in a limo after a speech, driving past a long-haired, hippie-type protester, dressed like a bum. The hippie was carrying a protest sign saying, "MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR".

When Reagan saw the protester, he stated,

"Looking at him, I'd be willing to bet he can't do either".

My favorite was: "I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience." -1984 presidential debate with Walter Mondale

Sorry about getting the year wrong in my post. The speech President Reagan gave in behalf of Barry Goldwater in Vallejo, Ca. was in 1964, not 1963 as I had stated.

I don't remember the exact quote, but he said something like I don't worry about the deficit, it is big enough to take care of itself.

Ya me too. I'm 33 now. My formative teen years were dominated by Reagan as President. I grew up thinking America is Conservative and Republicans are the regular people.

I love this story about Reagan:

In January 1982, President Ronald Reagan approved a CIA plan to sabotage the economy of the Soviet Union through covert transfers of technology that contained hidden malfunctions, including software that later triggered a huge explosion in a Siberian natural gas pipeline, according to a new memoir by a Reagan White House official.
The book mentioned in the article is a good one.

That was so funny!
If Reagan's reading this board up in Heaven, he should know that he's genuinely missed down here.

"You know damn well that Reagan is looking down at us and saying: "Well, there they (the democrats) go again.""

Reagan is looking down at us saying: "F'ing Ross Perot".
