VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A senior Vatican cardinal on Tuesday condemned the building of walls between countries to keep out immigrants and said Washington's plan to build a fence on the U.S.-Mexican border was part of an "inhuman program".

Cardinal Renato Martino made his comments at a news conference presenting Pope Benedict's message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Migrants and Refugees, in which the Pope called for more laws to help immigrants integrate.

"Speaking of borders, I must unfortunately say that in a world that greeted the fall of the Berlin Wall with joy, new walls are being built between neighborhood and neighborhood, city and city, nation and nation," said Martino, head of the Vatican's Council for Justice and Peace.

THE 21st CENTURY IN PICTURES War and Conflict View Slideshow President Bush signed legislation last month approving the construction of a 700-mile (1,100-km) fence -- a move that angered Mexico's government.

Bush defends the fence as necessary to tighten control of the border to keep criminals and terrorists out. Thousands of poor Mexicans risk their lives each year sneaking across the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) border to seek jobs.

Asked if the U.S.-Mexican fence was the wrong thing to do, Martino said: "Yes, that's exactly what it is."

If the Vatican was not so opposed to birth control, maybe we would not need a fence.

I wonder if the Vatican would be willing to take on a million or two Mexicans in Vatcian City?

Let them do as they want, break their laws, burden their social services network, etc...

I can't think of a better way for them to show true Christian kindness.

Put up or shut, Cardinal Martino.

Maybe they should sell some of those pretty trinkets the
Church is so fond of, and give all their money to the poor.

U.S.-Mexico fence "inhuman"

True enough. It is made of steel and concrete. If they want some human aspects for it, I suggest we make concrete like the Romans used to ... using illegal immigrants.

This is great news!! The fence isn't going to be human! I was afraid we were going to have a repeat of that "Hands Across America" human chain crap again.

However, I must say that a large human fence would be kind of fun- it would be like a huge game of Red Rover!

As a Catholic, I have to say, "Thanks for your opinion, Cardinal. See you at the next press conference."

What about the lock on my front door, cardinal? Is that inhuman also?

A time will come when people will simply no longer listen to socialists ever again, and every institution that had socialist spokesmen like Martino will pay the price.

I'd say there's a bit of difference between building them to keep people in and building them to keep people out

This is why I'm never at church anymore. The clergy is full of humanist fruits.

Some Cardinal gives his own opinion during a press conference stating that Pope Benedict says that we should have better ways to help immigrants (note- not specifically illegal immigrants) assimilate and suddenly it's dogma?

I think not.

how come the vatican does not oppose the oppressive governments that take our wages to give free rides to everyone else.

The did this in Rome and destroyed it as well. I thought the church was suppose to provide charity.

The Church should stick to `nib-nosing' and giving unsolicited advice and opinions on a subject they know something about:
