New recruit in Hawaii is sniper cop

HONOLULU - The former Maryland police chief who headed the Washington-area sniper manhunt three years ago graduated as one of 40 new Honolulu police recruits. Charles Moose, 53, will hit the streets for patrol duty tomorrow morning alongside a police veteran. He graduated from the academy on Thursday.

"It's been a long time since I've worked the street ... but it's exactly what I want to do over the next several years," he said.

Moose led the task force that investigated the three-week shooting spree that left 10 people dead and terrorized the Washington area in 2002. John Muhammad and Lee Malvo were arrested. Muhammad was sentenced to death; Malvo was ordered to serve life in prison.

Moose resigned as Montgomery County police chief in 2003 amid criticism that he was improperly cashing in by writing a book about the sniper case. He now lives in West Oahu.

Everyone entering the Honolulu department must start as a recruit. "The physical part was very challenging, but I actually got better," Moose said. "It got an old guy into shape."

Have to give him props for making it through PT at the age of 53.

Didn't this dolt write a book or something? Is that how he can afford to live in Hawaii on a cop's salary, lol?

Moving from Maryland to Hawaii? Not so stupid in my book.... It's a beautiful day in Hawaii and I hear the surf is up. :)

Aloha, Janet

This guy'll fit in perfectly in Honolulu, with his automatic assumption that the snipers *had* to be white;

how much sooner might they have caught those @sswipes if they'd been looking at EVERYone?

Article: Everyone entering the Honolulu department must start as a recruit.

What part of that didn't register?

He's a Major in the AF Reserves (or was). You might challenge his being Chief, certainly about the book, but the guy's not a total dolt as you suggest.

Oh, I don't know. I know some cops who've gone back to the street because it's more rewarding and actually lower-stress. I could see a former (bungling) chief doing this.

Hey, I'm with you!! I know many who would like to quit their jobs and hang out in Paradise. My standard joke to resort bellhops every time I go out there is "I offered management $2 more/hour to do your job than what you're paying and so they said I can start tomorrow." :)

I think that's a safe bet.

As someone else said, you just can't make this stuff up!
