Just Married (32 Years Ago) - (Arkansas Pubbie acting like a Clinton alert)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | November 14, 2006 | James Taranto

'Wedding' registries in the names of Gov. Mike Huckabee and his wife, Janet, have been set up at two department store chains in advance of the Huckabees' move out of the Governor's Mansion into a private home," the Arkansas News Bureau reports from Little Rock:

The term-limited governor leaves office in January, and friends of Janet Huckabee created the registries at Dillard's and Target stores to help facilitate their transition to private life, Huckabee spokeswoman Alice Stewart said Friday.

The Huckabees purchased a 7,000-square-foot home in North Little Rock this year.

Arkansas law prohibits "items costing more than $100 which are given to public servants to show appreciation for their efforts (i.e., to reward them for doing their job) or to reward them for past or future action." But it makes an exception for "wedding or engagement gifts." The Huckabees married in 1974.

Hard to believe a governor of Arkansas and his wife would behave tackily and skirt ethical limits.

I'm sorry, but that that is more funny than anything else. Too funny for me to even condemn it.

In Arkansas and they registered at TARGET!

I would think if the lovely couple can afford a 7000sq. ft. house, they can afford dishes and towels and silverware. When they moved into the gov. mansion, did they throw out everything they had before?

I went to the Target website and looked up what Dear Mike and Janet wishlist. Seemed about average for a couple who had to refurnish a house. The most expensive thing I saw was cookware for 250.00.

At least since they are being showered with goodies we can hopefully assume they are not carting the silver and linens down the back stairs as they leave.

It is ridiculous but I think something as little as this is gonna make a Huckabee candidacy turn into a joke.

That is unless he is clever enough to turn it around which will make him popular.

They lived in a very modest house, and it's doubtful they acquired the taste for the "finer things in life" 10 years ago.

The rewards the Huckabees have received from this State are many..and one of them was that because he was an overweight Gov., he could sell his "Quit digging Your Grave With a Knife and Fork" book, thus allowing them the down payment and loan to buy that 7,000 sq. ft. Mansion with pool..which BTW, is about a 2 minute drive from my house. It's impressive..so is the upkeep and maintenance..whew! He'll get a modest Gov's pension, but that's not enough to maintain his standard of living..

This has hit the fan in Arkansas, and it's front page news. Their "friends" could have just thrown them a "housewarming" party when they moved into their new digs...it's that simple.

Janet should have rejected this "wedding registry" debacle until they left office in January. It's beyond tacky..
