Kucinich Calls for Cutting Off Iraq War Funds

Congressman Kucinich called Wednesday for cutting off funding of the Iraq war, as the surest way out of Iraq. His statements were made in an interview by Democracy Now!'s Amy Goodman.

"I want to say that there's one solution here, and it's not to engage in a debate with the President, who has taken us down a path of disaster in Iraq, but it's for Congress to assume the full power that it has under the Constitution to cut off funds. We don't need to keep indulging in this debate about what to do, because as long as we keep temporizing, the situation gets worse in Iraq.

"We have to determine that the time has come to cut off funds. There’s enough money in the pipeline to achieve the orderly withdrawal that Senator McGovern is talking about. But cut off funds, we must. That's the ultimate power of the Congress, the power of the purse. That's how we'll end this war, and that’s the only way we’re going to end this war.

"We need to shift our direction."

"We have to take a whole new approach. We’re spending over $400 billion a year, money that's also needed for healthcare, for education, for job creation, for seniors. We have to take a new look at this. We need to be a strong country, but strength isn't only military. Strength is also the economic strength of the people, their chance to have good neighborhoods. We spend more money than all the countries of the world put together for the military.

"It's time for us to start to shift our vision about who we are as a nation, because if we don't do that -- we’re borrowing money right now to wage the war in Iraq. We’re borrowing money from China. We’re not looking at our trade deficit. We’re not looking at conditions, where people are going bankrupt trying to pay their hospital bills. We need to shift our direction, and the direction has to be away from the continued militarization of the United States society."

You (and ALL of us) should continue to point out at every opportunity what Americans voted for (tax increases, more corrupt government, terrorism at home and abroad, partisan bickering, etc. etc) - as if this is still the campaign season. It is, after all, the "campaign season" for the 2008 Presidential election.

It is up to us to provide the CONTINUING EDUCATION that the former elected Republican majority neglected to do. Hopefully, after 2 years of the same-old-same-old under Democratic leadership, true conservative Republicans may be elected again.

If, God forbid, we are hit again before 2008, we can all say to those same (non)voting Americans, "Oh well, whatever!" (Yes, that makes me very angry, but it also makes me angry that so many Americans were so disinterested and/or apathetic. They have cost our nation dearly.)

Those who accused the Bush administration of having started a war that is another Vietnam will ensure that it becomes just that.

These are the same exact words that echoed the halls of our government then, and they come from the same party. Isn't it ironic that they are the ones throwing this cliche "another Vietnam" around as if they had some high ground on this topic?

Before they are done, I will have lost three of my friends, spent 16 months away from home, and bloodied my hands for nothing. It's not Rumsfeld or Bush I loath, they sent me to do a dangerous job that was needed to be done. It's the assholes who fall in our back and claim "they care" for us, the ones who exploit the war by using it as a political club to beat on the opposition while they were in the minority. Those who say "they care" for the VET and tried so hard to recruit VETS who will say Rumsfeld is bad or the war is wrong, who used them as poster child's, and in a time when national unity was required to confront a common national even internation threat did all they could to divide us for their political gain, those are the guys I loath.

The word "Democrat" has become an insult in our household. Now I know where my father (Joined the USAF in 1965) was coming from. I guess his generation saw the same thing. Who says history doesn't repeat itself?

From David Horowitz's Discover the Network site:

"Democracy Now! receives indirect funding from George Soros, and direct funding from Soros' Open Society Institute, the Glaser Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Tides Foundation, the Public Welfare Foundation, the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy, and other left-leaning foundations."

Notice that these tax exempt marxist organizations work together to destroy these United States. Where else would they find support for the Pacifica/Amy Goodmand radio network?

...but there will be enough money to pay for all the new troops brought in under Chuck Schumer's draft bill when that passes right?

I've been calling for Dennis to be cut off as well.... just below the chin and above the collar bone. The guy is a walking poster child for retro-active abortions. Mother Teresa herself would have knocked this twerp out with a hard swung right hook.

Dammit. This F'ing guy is throwing away American lives. He's throwing away America. He's proving once again, like that bastard Kerry that America is too weak to fight and WIN a war.

If we leave now, watch what happens in this country. It happened in Spain, America is next.

The pathetic twerp needs ... nevermind, I'll be banned and the SS will be knocking.

I'm so pissed off, I'm gonna have a smoke.

/rant.

Treason. There's no other word for it. What would people have said in WWII if a congressman had proposed cutting off funding for the war? It's treason, pure and simple.

It's treason, pure and simple.

Of course. However, there isn't anyone anywhere in the Halls of Power that actually wants to do anything about the treason in our midst. You need something stiffer than linguine for a spine...

Muslims are not capable of making democracy and freedom work (unless they have been secularized like the Kurds)

I'm coming around to that conclusion also.

That is what the American people, by their votes, said that they wanted.
