One of the great thinkers of all time.

Right up there with Smith and Locke.

RIP

Where did you get this "fixation" notion from, Chas?

ACK!

I had bookmarked the Free To Choose PBS show, but now I see that it's no longer available.

Anyway, sad news about Friedman, the FtC show (1970s?) explained things in a very clear way to me, and I ejoyed it immensely. He was a good teacher, too bad he didn't have better pupils (in leadership today).

I absolutely adored that man and his wife.

I was fortunate enough to have bought a special, signed copy of their book, "Free To Choose" when I was just a teen years ago.

His wife is as dear and as smart as was he.

Both are truly remarkable examples of so much of what we all ought to me.

My prayers are with his wife and family.

> I believe he called himself, at one point, an "anarcho-capitalist".<

No, that's his son, David Friedman.

His wife was more the conservative. She was even for the War on Terror that he felt was a mistake.

That's what I loved most about him. His championing of school vouchers saved many American kids, It will continue to do so in the future.

As a child of Free to Choose I am greatly saddened by his passing.

From the article you linked to:
By his desk hangs a map of Belize--one of those stylized souvenirs made of cloth, embroidered to catch the eye. Why, I asked him, did he have a map of Belize on his wall? Mr. Friedman turned, looked at the object, and said: "I don't know. I really don't know."

LOL, I love people like that.

Milton Friedman was a great man, a great mind and a great American. He will be sorely missed. May the torch be passed to a worthy successor.

Well said.

Milton Friedman, on the other hand, made economics "alive" for students, instilling economic hope wherever a free market could take hold.

Unfortunately, most colleges don't use Milton Friedman's books when teaching Economics, so it is pretty dismal. ;o)

>Economist Milton Friedman has died

Milton Friedman's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Milton Friedman's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Milton Friedman. Milton Friedman.

Milton Friedman's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Milton Friedman's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Milton Friedman. Milton Friedman.

Along the coast you'll hear them boast
About a light they say that shines so clear.
So raise your glass, we'll drink a toast
To the little man who sells you thrills along the pier.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back firmly on the ground.
He flies so high, he swoops so low,
He knows exactly which way he's gonna go.
Milton Friedman. Milton Friedman.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back on the ground.
He'll fly so high, he'll swoop so low.
Milton Friedman.

He'll fly his astral plane.

He'll bring you back the same day.
Milton Friedman. Milton Friedman.
Milton Friedman. Milton Friedman.
Milton Friedman.

Friedman was NOT a conservative. He was a libertarian thinker.

"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism." - Ronald Reagan

I have been swamped today and just heard this news. RIP Mr. Friedman. He had a great influence on me. When you traded bonds in the 70's and 80's Milton was your diety and when you died you could only hope to go to heaven via the University of Chicago.

I also majored in economics because of him, von Hayek, and von Mises.

Thank you for the link. It was a very enjoyable read. I remember reading "Free to Choose" many years ago. I don't believe I ever finished the book (that was because I often don't finish books), but it was quite good.

God rest his soul. I ALWAYS though him THE top economist. Should have been a Fed Chairman. As far as I am concerned, he is up there with Eric Hoffer, the poor man's philosopher.
