Screw you, Nevada!

ON SATURDAY, IT BEGAN.

I was sitting at a table in my favorite cigar bar, drinking a Duckhorn pinot noir, and enjoying a Bolivar cigar that was part of my recent haul at Cigar Aficionado's Big Smoke evening. The house band had just started up. Life was good.

And then she walked in. The Woman with the Dirty Looks.

Apparently, she'd missed the sign outside that identified the establishment as the "Havana Cigar Company." And the walk-in humidor with its hundreds of cigars. And the counter, where cigarettes, lighters and all manner of cigar

What is Heinlein's famous quote? (there are enormous gaps in my awareness of SciFi lore).
I may have missed the point of this newspaper story, because as I said I didn't read all of it. On reviewing it again, it looks like the Woman with the Dirty Looks strode into a place which for all intents and purposes would appeal to NO ONE but smokers, and decided to make an issue of it?Sort of the equivalent of a woman walking into a locker room at the stadium and yelling "there are men exposing their penises in here !!!! No, that is NOT right. But that is also not "where" the largest part of this issue is debated---admittedly though, maybe a small part of it.

Then what did the law accomplish?

The law didn't ban internet gambling.
The law was put into place to prevent any US based financial company from transferring money from themselves to an internet gambling site.

All you need to do is get a credit card from someone based outside the US and you're back online and gambling.

I guess I didn't express my point well, it was all off the top of my head, in about 2 minutes. I further elaborate in post #56 below. ( or actually ABOVE from where this one will sit.)

I don't even smoke and this guy had me rolling on the floor. Good for him. About time people woke up to nanny state mentality across this nation. And Vegas just shot it's tourism industry in the proverbial foot passing this law. It's FREAKIN LAS VEGAS for cryin out loud! The bottom line to all non-smokers. Don't like it, don't patronize the establishment. FU indeed. What did you expect to find in a city of sin and gambling you morons?

The smoke Nazis are going for the jugular now. Vegas? No Smoking?
Next thing you know they will outlaw gambling because, well, it's for my own good. Wouldn't want me to lose MY money.

I am so sick of this socialist crap I could puke!"

All of the construction changes have to be implemented by Dec 8 of this year. Even if most of the small bars had the money and the inclination, they cannot get building permits by then, much less find a competent contractor to do the job.
The jobs that are going to be erased because of this legislation if enormous.
I live in N Nevada, and we are more than a little angry over this. I don't smoke, but only 4-5 counties, heavily invaded by Kalifornia refugees, passed this mess.
I suspect there are going to be lots of little bars that serve food as an accomodation will shut down their kitchens and just serve "snacks"- nits-chips, etc.
I don't go bar-hopping, but I will deliberately spend at least 2 nights a month in the local small bar just to support them.

The ____________, __________, ________ police are on the move. You fill in the blanks

The gambling is what supports this state well enough in a manner to prevent STATE INCOME TAX. These people just don't get it. They are Kalifornicating Nevada.

You are focusing all your words on Las Vegas. This is a state law- not just Las Vegas.
Reno and Carson City and other NORTHERN NEVADA towns are going to have to obey the same laws, and gambling and tourism is the largest part of the economy here, also.
The next 2- ranching and mining- are under other pressures from the environazis.

You are correct- the voters shot themselves in the foot. Gambling keeps this state from implementing an income tax. Gambling brings enough money to the coffers.

You have missed the *spin* They are banning smoking - not to protect you from yourself but

to protect *workers* from your smoke.

Anchorage just went thru this - and did pass a smoking ban - to protect the *workers*.

I sometimes have a sense of deja vu when politicians use the word

Worker.

Shades of Lenin.

It aint just the left winger/democrats pushing these smoking bans...here in Missouri, the Republicans are just as guilty of pushing them.

Dumbfounded here. Good thing I read ahead before posting how the Dems are the smoke-nazis.

Also, isn't anyone curious as to what would happen if one violated a smoking ban? Or if hundreds or thousands did so at once? These "laws" are proving out the "sheeple" assertion.

Gambling brings enough money to the coffers.

Not just gambling. The whole "hospitality"/entertainment industry shtick contributes mightily to the local economy. The last time I was there I got a vip entrance to a nightclub call "Pure" (ha ha) to see some group of women called the "pussycat dolls" Gack were they awful No looks - no talent, just fat thighs and artificially large (and unattractive) tits. Even with their theatrical makup they were not appealing - should have been called the pussycat dogs, but when I left of abject boredom there were easily 1500 people in line to get into the place to see them. They way you get a table is buy a bottle of booze for $400 or $600 and then share it with your friends. Plus whatever the cover is to get in.
