I remember when the Defense Department was called the War Department.

"will be armed...?"
Of course not! When confronting an enemy, they will display the international peace gesture...bending over, grabbing ankles...

An early celebration of Peace Day. These people are visionaries.

Great! Now, if they can just translate Kumbaya into the language of the terrorists and teach them to sit cross-legged, holding flowers and swaying back and forth, after a few joints, and singing it, maybe it will work.

But for now, I'll stay in reality.

No, you don't! What was the War Department is now the Department of the Army.

In 1947, the brand-new Dep't of Defense subsumed the War Dep't, the Navy Dep't and the equally brand-new Dep't of the Air Force. Until WW2, "State," War and Navy, three separate cabinet agencies, shared the same office building next to the White House so they could keep an eye on each other.
