Polygamists fight to decriminalize bigamy
The Washington Post ^ | Nov 21, 2006 | John Pomfret

In her battle to legalize polygamy, the only thing Valerie hasn't revealed is her last name. The mother of eight has been on national TV; her photo along with that of her two "sister-wives" has graced the front cover of a glossy magazine dedicated to "today's plural marriages."

She has been prodded about her sex life: "He rotates. It's easy -- just one, two, three." Quizzed about her decision to share a husband with two other women: "You really have a good frame of reference when you marry a man who already has two wives." Interrogated about what it's like to live in a house with 21 children: "Remodeling a kitchen, that's no small feat with three wives and a husband involved."

All the while, the petite brunette with a smile as bright as Utah's sky has insisted that she's just like you and me: "I'm a soccer mom. My kids are in music lessons. They go to public school. I'm not under anyone's control."

Valerie and others among the estimated 40,000 men, women and children in polygamous communities are part of a new movement to decriminalize bigamy. Consciously taking tactics from the gay-rights movement, polygamists have reframed their struggle, choosing in interviews to de-emphasize their religious beliefs and focus on their desire to live "in freedom," according to Anne Wilde, director of community relations for Principle Voices, a pro-polygamy group based in Salt Lake.

In recent months, polygamy activists have held rallies, appeared on nationally televised news shows and lobbied legislators. Before the Nov. 7 elections, one pro-polygamy group issued a six-page analysis of all Utah's state and local candidates and their views on polygamy. "We can make a difference," the

As with gay marriage - consenting adults, and I don't see how it can possibly harm my marriage to my wife. I don't see why either I or the government should care.

Two thoughts -

1. You knew this was coming after gay-marriage was imposed by liberal judiciaries. They will use the exact same arguments.

2. Muslims can take up to 4 wives. This will help with Sharia Law where applicable.

Can we have a big list of "I told you so's?" We all knew it was coming.

The Supreme Beings should weigh in on this. I'm sure it's in the Constitution somewhere, provided that they say so. Otherwise, it's not.

Not two years ago, everyone was talking about gay marriage and we said "But that could lead to all this other stuff, starting with polygamy." and they said "Oh no, your just being paranoid. It'll never happen." Remember how they tore Santorum to pieces with his comments in that area. Yeah, well, looks like it's time for Step 2!

I could go for a 1/10th time share in a wife. That's about my speed. I assume my legal liability would be constrained to 10% of 50% of my assets and future income. Hell, that's less than sales tax.

Deal !!

Of course we knew this was coming; the liberals did this with their adoption of moral relativism. If it's ok for two people of the same gender, why not one man and five women? Or how about one woman and three men? Or, if someone really, really, loves their cat...

It's all part of the same logic.

My vet bills are outrageous, and I have pretty good health coverage -- so I'd like to marry my cat. Hope my vet takes Blue Cross/Blue Shield!

Except that plural marriage sets up a MASSIVE load of potential problems that could tie up the legal system for years and years and years. Imagine plural divorces, multi-spousal insurance coverage, multi-spousal tax issues and on and on. The mind just boggles at how incredibly stupid allowing ploygamy would be here in the 21st century.

"As with gay marriage - consenting adults, and I don't see how it can possibly harm my marriage to my wife. I don't see why either I or the government should care."

Well, for starters, a heck of a lot of the kids produced from the current illicit unions are on welfare. I'm not sure it's in the best interest of any kid to share his father with twenty or so other kids and a few other moms.

It's also a horrible, horrible lifestyle foisted on these women. What do you think those first wives feel like when they see their husband taking his next wife. Do a websearch on the misery and suffering of these women. It's awful.

Why would you deny right of another woman to marry a man, just because one already did it?
