MUSLIM terrorists are no more likely to come from places with large Islamic populations than anywhere else, according to Manchester academics.
Dr Ludi Simpson and Dr Nissa Finney studied media reports to map the location of suspects charged under anti-terror laws.
The Manchester university researchers found that the proportion of people who have been charged is no greater in areas with large Muslim populations.
They warn that "branding" areas such as Bradford and Newham, in London, as terrorism hotbeds is not only inaccurate but creates an atmosphere of "prejudice and fear".
Dr Simpson said: "We looked at the 75 cases of Muslims charged under anti-terrorist legislation outlined in the media from 2004 to the present day, where we know the place of residence.
"Their locations are spread pretty evenly across all the places Muslims live and it's not in any way restricted to areas where there are large Muslim populations."

The researchers, from the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research, said the study was hampered by restricted access to the locations of suspects, forcing them to rely on media reports.
Dr Simpson said: "The Crime Prosecution Service was reluctant to provide a more comprehensive list.
"But we've made an application under the Freedom of Information Act which will hopefully allow us to carry out this research in more detail."
Dr Simpson also warned politicians of the dangers of isolating some areas.
He said: "When politicians who want to tackle terrorism target ethnic minorities according to the area they live, it's a very destructive thing and not based on reality.
"The authorities should focus on direct information about terrorist activities and not go by innuendo.
"Branding a particular area as a hotbed of terrorism is immensely damaging and creates prejudice and fear. It's just a fantasy."
Dr Simpson will be taking part in a one-to-one debate on Segregation with Prof Ted Cantle from the Community Cohesion Institute at the Commission for Racial Equality's Race Convention 2006 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London next week.
I suppose Islamofascists come from Catholic or Evangelical or Hindu communities? What a crock.
Sleep well Britain.

There's no terrorism here, folks, just move along. Get on with your dreary little jobs so you can pay the taxes that keep us gov folks fat and happy. We'll protect you. Don't you worry 'bout a thing!
yah.. Islamofacists are said to spring up from Budhist, Baptist, and other religions but Islam!
What percentage rates an orange color?
Perhaps 15%. Isn't that the unofficial Muslim percentage in France?
And Canada's that high?
I know you put the word "study" in quotes, and rightly so. It wasn't a study. It was a pre-planned propaganda piece. The "study" portion was designed to meet pre-planned needs.
Somebody here once posted a list of events that happens as Muslims increase their percentage in a country, starting at 1% (with the Muslims being docile and peaceful) and going up to 51% (with the Muslims enacting Sharia). Anybody have a copy of that list? I lost it. (And one of the problems of posting as often as I do is that it's too hard to go back and search through my own posts.)
It's frightening. But by all means, we should keep accelerating our open-door policy towards those who will overwhelm us with that evil "religion". Our govt really does know what's best for us.
That fact that ALL Islamic terrorist are Muslim still remains.
As a matter of fact, I'm only aware of one other group of people who employ terror - Enviro-terrorists.
In other words, ALL MUSLIMS are possible terrorists.
In other words, ALL MUSLIMS are possible terrorists.
Exactly, although I'm not sure that was the point they were trying to make. ;)
Don't do that! I nearly fell our of my chair laughing!
Lol - it has to be the funniest headline I have seen today, but all for the wrong reasons.
